Chiefly letters on personal affairs, ornithology, and publications, mostly to his wife Lucy and his son Victor. Many contain descriptions of the sections of the United States where the artist was then traveling to solicit subscriptions for his publications. Other correspondents include John James Abert, John Bachman, William Cooper, Richard Harlan, and Thomas McCulloch, Jr. There is also a fragment of an unpublished journal, New Orleans, 1821.
