American engineer.
Hiram Barney (1811-1895) acquired the land in the Half-Breed Tract that would become the White Elk Vineyard in the 1840s. The vineyard was established in 1869 when Barney sent his son, Lewis Tappan Barney, a Civil War veteran, to develop and manage the vineyard. Within years, the White Elk vineyard was producing from 15,000 to 30,000 gallons of Concord, Ives, Norton, and Clinton wines a year; the wines were sold as far south as New Orleans and as far west as Denver. In 1880, the White Elk vineyard was incorporated, with John H. Craig as the president, Lewis T. Barney, the vice-president, and Hiram Barney as a director. In 1903, the vineyard was purchased by Chester P. Cory, a teetotaler who switched to producing grape juice. It was closed down in 1914.
Hiram Barney (1811-1895), lawyer and collector of the port of New York, began practicing law in 1836 in New York City, specializing in debt collection. In 1848 he formed a partnership with Benjamin F. and William A. Butler, which lasted until 1874. A militant anti-slavery Democrat, Barney joined the Republicans in 1854 and earned a reputation for political acumen. In 1857 he won the confidence of Abraham Lincoln, who as President appointed him collector of the port of New York. Barney held the office until resigning in 1864. The remainder of his life was devoted to private business and family affairs

In 1857 he won the confidence of Abraham Lincoln, who as President appointed him collector of the port of New York. Barney held the office until resigning in 1864. The remainder of his life was devoted to private business and family affairs.
Biography
Hiram Barney, lawyer and collector for the Port of New York, was born in Henderson, New York, on May 30, 1811. After graduating from Union College in 1833, he held a law clerkship and was admitted to the New York bar in 1836. Barney's legal career began with the firm of William Mulligan in 1836. In 1838, he entered into a partnership with William D. Waterman and in 1841, with William Mitchell. During the early years of his career, Barney, largely engaged as a "collections" lawyer, did much of his business in the West, especially Iowa. In 1849, Barney formed yet another partnership with Benjamin F. Butler and his son, William Allen Butler. After the retirement of the elder Butler and the arrival and departure of James Humphrey, the firm became known as Barney, Butler, and Parsons. Barney remained with his firm until 1874, when he was retained as special counsel. Barney's final legal partnership began in 1878 with Edward D. Cowman.
In addition to carrying out his legal obligations, Barney became active in the anti-slavery movement and related political parties. Possibly he was influenced by his marriage to Susan Aspinwall Tappan, the daughter of Lewis Tappan, a prominent abolitionist. In 1840, Barney was nominated for Congress by the Anti-Slavery Party, but received only 350 votes. Barney attended the Free Soil Party Convention in 1848, and in 1852, he headed the electoral ticket on behalf of Hale and Julian. Following the organization of the Republican Party in 1856, Barney served as a delegate to the Philadelphia Convention, but voted for Sumner instead of Fremont. In 1860, he attended the convention in Chicago which nominated Abraham Lincoln for president. Barney was said to have collected $35,000 in New York to further Lincoln's candidacy. His association with Lincoln was close and constant.
Lincoln's appointment of Barney to the post of Collector of the Port of New York in 1861 proved anything but rewarding. Barney inherited a collector-ship bogged down with political patronage and graft. As Collector, he was overwhelmed with applications, testimonials, and office seekers. The Civil War intensified his responsibilities. In addition Barney attempted to continue with his professional business, much of which demanded his absence from the state. Duped by those he trusted, Barney proved unequal to the demands of the office. Following investigations by the Treasury Department, Barney resigned. His personal integrity seems never to have been questioned and he retained the respect and affection of his friends and business associates. However, his health broke under the strain.
Having overextended his business interests, hard times in the 1870's dogged Barney year after year. The death of his first wife, Susan (Tappan) Barney, added to his burden. On August 26, 1880, Barney married Harriet E. Kilbourne, the daughter of one of his Iowa business associates, by whom he had several children. He seems never to have fully recuperated, either in business or health. When he died on May 18, 1895, he was attempting to dispose of the family estate, Cedar Knolls, at Kingsbridge, New York.

Martin, M. L. (Morgan Lewis), 1805-1887. Morgan Martin papers, 1645-1931.
Title:
Morgan Martin papers, 1645-1931.
Papers of a Wisconsin pioneer and land speculator who served in the Wisconsin Territorial Council, as Washington representative for Wisconsin Territory, president of the state constitutional convention, member of the state legislature, United States Army paymaster, Indian agent, and Brown County judge, including correspondence, diaries, accounts, land patents and other legal and business records, reminiscent articles by Martin, and reminiscences and a brief diary by Mrs. Martin. Business and personal correspondence, which forms the bulk of the collection, largely concerns legal problems, land grants and purchases, Indian affairs, the fur trade, governmental activities, and personal news. Among the early papers in the collection are a few relating to the fur trade, particularly the operations of the Abbott brothers, Samuel, James, and Robert, centering around Detroit and Mackinac, Michigan; controversies before the merger of fur companies in 1821; and the bankruptcy of the American Fur Company. Beginning with Martin's removal to Green Bay, Wisconsin in 1827 there are numerous business and legal papers relating to his work as an attorney for local and eastern clients, particularly as that of a collection agent. Legislative papers contain correspondence, 1845-1847, when he served as territorial representative in Washington, on Wisconsin problems such as land claims, mineral rights, pensions, appointments, elections, and internal improvements. Letters from constituents contain many references to Wisconsin politics. Letters during the Civil War describe his service as a United States army paymaster and after the Civil War deal with his problems as Indian agent for the Menominee, Stockbridge, and Oneida Indians and include comments on claims, annuities, and treaties. Correspondents include William Beaumont, Florimond Bonduel, Ramsay Crooks, Henry Dodge, George Dewey, Lucius Fairchild, Alexander J. Irwin, Andrew Jackson, James T. Lewis, Lucius Lyon, Philetus Sawyer, Horatio Seymour, John B. Sheldon, and Daniel Webster. Other papers contain information on the career of James D. Doty. Material on the Fox River Improvement Company includes correspondence with Hiram Barney, an Eastern investor in the company, some claims of Martin's against the state, and a few record books. After 1865, Martin's correspondence largely concerns the financial difficulties of the company and his efforts to meet his obligations which continued until his death. Martin was one of the promoters of the Bank of Wisconsin at Green Bay, Wisconsin and for a time its president. There are checks, notes, and drafts relating to this bank and to the Farmers' and Mechanics' Bank of Detroit, Michigan and letters by Henry Stringham, cashier of the Wisconsin bank, advising and commenting on banking practices. The development of the townsite of Milwaukee, Wisconsin is enlarged upon in communications from Solomon Juneau and others, and in records of sales of lots, tax receipts, and statements of accounts. References to Indian affairs are found in traders' claims, in a letter by George Boyd in 1841, and in some Stockbridge correspondence in the 1870s. Among miscellaneous subjects touched upon are Antimasonry in Michigan Territory, the organization of the Episcopal Church in Green Bay, Wisconsin, the building of the first Milwaukee, Wisconsin courthouse, lake transportation, and land sales in the Lake Michigan region. Personal papers include correspondence with relatives and friends in Martinsburgh, Lowville, and elsewhere in New York State, and scattered account books, 1836-1848. There are some reminiscent articles written by Martin towards the end of his life and a folder of rough drafts of reminiscences by Mrs. Martin. A group of letters, land patents, and other legal documents of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries relates to ancestors of Mr. and Mrs. Martin in the colony of New York prior to the American Revolution. Also present are diaries of Mrs. Martin (nee Elizabeth Smith) kept before and after her marriage. Letters from their son, Leonard Martin, describe the work and life of a surveyor of the Northern Pacific Railroad in Montana, 1871-1872. Letters, 1873-1874, received by Leonard concern his work as assistant engineer for the Fox River Improvement project of the U.S. government. The correspondence of daughters Deborah and Sarah Martin includes many letters pertaining to the State Historical Society of Wisconsin and notes, biographical sketches, and genealogical data relating to Brown County, Wisconsin. Some papers also support the disputed claim of Mrs. Martin's brother, Admiral Melancton Smith, to credit the capture of the rebel ram Manassas while he was serving as captain of the warship Mississippi. The processed portion is summarized above and is described in the register. Additional accessions date 1825-1885 and are described below.

Salmon P. Chase Papers
Title:
Salmon P. Chase Papers
Salmon P. Chase (1808-1873) was a career politician and an influential Union decision-maker during the Civil War. He served as governor of Ohio, U.S. senator, secretary of the Treasury, and Supreme Court chief justice. The Salmon P. Chase Papers, which span the years 1824-1884, provide tremendous insight into the professional life of Chase and provide information on the National Bank and specie debates, as well as the abolition movement from the early 1820s through the Civil War. This collection contains correspondence, speech notes, newspaper clippings, biographical material, court opinions, financial papers, and a myriad of miscellaneous items. In addition to containing Chase's papers, this collection also contains the papers of J. W. Schuckers, Chase's personal secretary and biographer. Schuckers’s papers give further insight into the economic situation immediately following the Civil War and include correspondence, newspapers, investments records, and other financial papers.
