Correspondence, chiefly with Bishop William Rollinson Whittingham, of Maryland, relating to Burgess's rectorship of Christ Church, Hartford, Conn., 1837-1847, and affairs of his episcopate. Among many subjects are a revision of the hymnal; and a German version of the Prayer Book; clergy matters; Burgess's catalogue of ordinations in the Episcopal Church; and dealings with a number of bishops, particularly Horatio Southgate, George W. Doane, and Philander Chase. Some letters concern Chase's opposition to the consecration of George Upfold as bishop, 1849. McIlvaine, Charles Pettit, 1799-1873. Charles Pettit McIlvaine papers, 1820-1873.
Title:
Charles Pettit McIlvaine papers, 1820-1873.
The papers cover much of the career of this leading Low Churchman. They begin with his transfer to the Diocese of Maryland, ordination as priest by Bishop James Kemp, and first ministry at Christ Church, Georgetown, D.C., 1821-1825. Substantial materials concern the dispute with Bishop Kemp over proposals for a theological seminary in Maryland. A letter of 1822 excommunicates a parishioner for refusing to conduct family worship in his home. Other correspondence of that year concerns McIlvaine's criticisms of the faculty of St. John's College, Annapolis, and his service as chaplain of the U.S. Senate. Further controversies involved attacks on Bishops John Hobart and Henry U. Onderdonk, 1828-1829, and many later debates on matters of business, doctrine, and churchmanship with Bishops Philander Chase and George W. Doane, among others. The majority of the papers relate to affairs of the Diocese of Ohio and of the Episcopal Church in general. They include material on the history of Kenyon College; numerous charges and pastoral letters to the Episcopal Church in Ohio, together with many printed sermons, addresses and tracts produced by McIlvaine. The papers detail his theological beliefs, Low Church principles, evangelical zeal, interest in education, views on church music, opposition to ritualism and the Roman Catholic Church, and involvement with the General Theological Seminary. There is much concerning relations with the Church of England and condemnation of the Tractarian movement. Letters, sermons, and prayers of the Civil War period show McIlvaine's attitude to the war, support for Bishop Whittingham's Unionist stand in Maryland, and views on the separation of the Episcopal Churches in the North and South. After the war comes material on his role the the reunion of the Episcopal Church and his support of the Freedmens' Commission. A letter of 1869 concerns a meeting in Baltimore of the Peabody Fund for Education in the South. Several letters of 1869-1871 deal with McIlvaine's membership in a committee of the House of Bishops on theological education, and other items show his support for the Society for the Promotion of Evangelical Knowledge. References to individual bishops and other clergy abound in these papers.

Title:
George Washington Doane papers, 1827-1882.
This large collection consists of voluminous and intimate correspondence with Bishop William Rollinson Whittingham, together with associated materials about Bishop Doane and tributes to him. There is a wide range of subject matter, from family affairs to worldwide concerns of the Episcopal Church. Topics include Doane's election as Bishop of New Jersey, 1832, and affairs of his Diocese, with references to a host of clergymen and lay persons. There are materials on his difficulties, charges against him, and his trial and exoneration, 1852-1853. Among many interests are the Sunday School Union, religious periodicals and publications of the period, the New York Protestant Episcopal Press, missions, especially Bishop Horatio Southgate's mission to the Ottoman Empire, and the Tractarian movement in England. Much concerns Doane's great interest in education, his founding of St. Mary's Hall, Burlington, N.J., 1837, and Burlington College, 1846; the affairs of Washington College (later renamed Trinity College), Hartford, Conn.; and the General Theological Seminary in New York. Many letters involve Doane's relations with other bishops, including Charles P. McIlvaine, Benjamin T. Onderdonk, Stephen Elliott, John S. Ravenscroft, and James H. Otey. There is frank discussion of Bishop Whittingham's achievements and problems in Maryland. Doane states his views on Nestorian and Moravian episcopacy, relations with the Church of England and the Orthodox Churches, and many matters before the General Convention and the House of Bishops. The letters reflect his wide reading and opinions on theological controversies of the time, especially the conflict between High and Low Churchmen.

Coxe, A. Cleveland (Arthur Cleveland), 1818-1896. Arthur Cleveland Coxe papers, 1837-1887.
Title:
Arthur Cleveland Coxe papers, 1837-1887.
The papers cover a broad range of ecclesiastical interests, colored by Coxe's close friendship with Bishop William Rollinson Whittingham, which occasioned much of this frank and confidential correspondence. They span most of Coxe's career, beginning with student days at the General Theological Seminary, 1840-1841, and work in St. Anne's Parish, Morrisania, N.Y., 1841-1842; St. John's Parish, Hartford, Conn., 1843-1854; and Grace Church, Baltimore, 1854-1863. Many describe conditions and events in the Dioceses of Connecticut and Massachusetts during that period. A great deal of material concerns the Diocese of Maryland and events in Maryland, especially relating to the history of Grace Church. Coxe gives his views on slavery and the condition of slaves in Baltimore. Civil War correspondence concerns his troubles as a Unionist and correspondence with the Reverend William E. Wyatt about publication in England of Coxe's views on the Civil War. After the war, Coxe writes of changes he perceived in Maryland and the abolition of slavery. He also writes Whittingham about many of the problems confronting that bishop. Other subjects are Coxe's declining election as Bishop of Texas, 1856; appointment as President of Trinity College, Hartford, Conn.; call to Calvary Church, New York City, 1863?; and election as Bishop Coadjutor of Western New York (of which he later was Bishop), 1864. Many papers pertain to his episcopate, dealing with affairs of that Diocese and of the Episcopal Church throughout the world. Diocesan items include many clergy matters, a Pastoral Letter to the women of the Diocese on the role of women in the Church, 1868, a letter of 1887 about St. Paul's Cathedral, Buffalo, and a sermon on the vocation of the laity. Substantial materials concern Coxe's writings. His poems, tracts, and sermons, as well as numerous letters, reveal his views on literature, hymn writing, churchmanship, Catholic tradition, translation of the Bible, theology, the Sunday School movement, marriage, the Prayer Book, the Freedmans' Commission, and many other matters. He opposes the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament and some other High Church developments, occasioning a dispute with the Reverend Charles C. Grafton (later Bishop of Fond du Lac), 1874. There is much on education, particularly the General Theological Seminary and Nashotah House in Wisconsin. Many letters concern relations with other bishops, among them George W. Doane, William C. Doane, George M. Randall, Theodore B. Lyman, Horatio Southgate, Manton Eastburn, and Charles F. Robertson, as well as other clergymen and laymen, such as the Reverend Libertus Van Bokkelen and Hugh Davey Evans, of Maryland. Matters of broader scope are relations with the Unitarian, Roman Catholic, Old Catholic, and Orthodox Churches. Many letters also discuss relations with the Church of England, including the Lambeth Conferences and Coxe's contacts with English bishops, such as the Bishops of Lichfield, Ely, and Kingston, in the 1870s. Other papers relate to Coxe's support of the mission in Turkey in the 1840s and his work on the Italian Church Reformation Commission of the House of Bishops, 1865-1872; the Russo-Greek Committee, 1866-1874; and the Mexican Commission, 1874-1876. There are many references to business of the General Conventions of the Church, and minor references to the translation of the Prayer Book into German, Coxe's supervision of the missions in Haiti, 1872, and his views on the mission in Liberia.

Title:
William Croswell Doane papers, 1855-1883.
Papers associated with this prominent High Church bishop largely concern affairs of the Diocese of New Jersey, with comments on his father, Bishop George W. Doane, and on Bishop William H. Odenheimer, also of New Jersey, and affairs of the newly organized Diocese of Albany. Most of the correspondence is with Bishop William Rollinson Whittingham. Correspondence begins with Doane's early ministry in St. Barnabas's and St. Mary's Churches, Burlington, N.J., and Burlington College, 1855-1862. He declines offers of parishes in Maryland and supports Bishop Whittingham in his Civil War troubles. Several letters are about Doane's election as Bishop of Albany, opposition thereto, and defense of his churchmanship, 1868-1869. Some concern clergy matters and Doane's wish to found a hospital in his Diocese. He promotes the appointment of Whittingham to attend the conferences of the Old Catholic Churches in Bonn and Cologne in the 1870s, and writes of relations with the Church of England and the Lambeth Conferences. Some papers relate to his work on the Mexican Commission of the House of Bishops, 1874-1876, concerning the Church of Jesus in Mexico. Other letters reflect Doane's views on the Eucharist, ritual, and the constitution of the House of Clerical and Lay Deputies. The correspondence ends with a difference of opinion with Bishop William Pinkney of Maryland over a point of canon law.

Doane, and the consecration of Stephen Elliott as Bishop of Georgia, 1840. Some letters concern Ives's interest in education and his school in Raleigh, as well as descriptions of conditions, visitations, and events in his diocese. Title:
Philander Chase papers, 1808-1876.
The collection consists of correspondence by and about this influential leader of the Low Church party. Early correspondence is primarily with Bishops Thomas John Claggett and James Kemp, of Maryland, and subjects include affairs of Bishop Samuel Seabury; publication of Seabury's sermons; Chase's election as Bishop of Ohio, 1818; and a controversy with Bishop John H. Hobart. Many letters concern Chase's controversial fund-raising visit to England, his dealings with Lord Kenyon, and his success there, 1823-1824. There is much material on the founding and history of Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio. Later correspondence is chiefly with Bishop William Rollinson Whittingham of Maryland, and covers a multitude of issues and events. Among these are Chase's transfer to the Diocese of Illinois, 1835; the affairs of that Diocese; Chase's activities as Presiding Bishop, including strong criticism of his use of the powers of that office and his continuing interest in education; there is material about Jubilee College, Illinois, which he founded, and other projects. Much concerns relations with other bishops, especially Benjamin T. Onderdonk, George W. Doane, George Upfold, and Charles P. McIlvaine, as well as many other clergymen. Letters relate to business of the House of Bishops and General Conventions of the Episcopal Church, changes in canon law, innovations in ritual, and similar matters. Chase's worldwide interests are reflected in noteworthy papers regarding the Eastern Orthodox Churches and relations with the Church of England, in which Chase was accused of exceeding his authority. Included are his commission for Bishop Horatio Southgate as emissary to the Orthodox Church in the Ottoman Empire, 1845, and letters about missions in Greece and Turkey. There are also references to establishment of the Episcopal Church in the Republic of Texas, 1843. Several items contain evaluations of the Chase's work and character by others, both before and after his death.

Title:
William Ingraham Kip papers, 1837-1974.
This collection contains significant biographical material, because most of it is confidential correspondence with Bishop William Rollinson Whittingham. It includes accounts of Kip's physical sufferings, financial sacrifices for the Church, family affairs, and affairs of the Episcopal Church in California, 1856-1877. There are also comments on Kip's writings, theological beliefs, views on relations with the Church of England and the Roman Catholic Church, developments in the Diocese of Maryland, and the difficulties of Bishop George W. Doane. Several letters concern St. Paul's Church, Albany, N.Y., and other churches in that state, 1837-1853, prior to Kip's election as bishop. The majority relate to the Diocese of California after 1853, business of the Board of Missions, rivalry with Roman Catholics, Civil War troubles in California, clergy matters, and so forth. Kip declines appointment as Bishop of Haiti, 1872, and wishes to become bishop for the Episcopal Churches in Europe, 1874. There are letters concerning his sons, William and Lawrence Kip, and the latter's military service in the Civil War, as well as subsequent correspondence about the Bishop's biography.

Upfold, George, 1796-1872. George Upfold papers, 1829-1870.
Title:
George Upfold papers, 1829-1870.
The collection consists of Upfold's colorful private correspondence with Maryland Bishop William Rollinson Whittingham, and letters of others about him. Subjects include the New York Protestant Episcopal Press, the New York Protestant Episcopal Tract Society, affairs of St. Luke's Church, New York City, and the Sunday School Union. More substantial materials concern Upfold's rectorship of Trinity Church, Pittsburgh, 1831; his travels in the middle west and description of church affairs there, 1840, including support for Bishop Jackson Kemper; his election as Bishop of Indiana and opposition thereto; troubles with Bishop Philander Chase; views concerning the trial of Bishop Benjamin T. Onderdonk and belief in his innocence; affairs of the Diocese of Indiana; descriptions of episcopal visitations; and many clergy matters, including references to John Martin, George Lamb Roberts, Ashbel Steele, and Horace Stringfellow, Jr. Upfold writes of wanting no "ultraism" among his clergy and deplores romanizing. He urges moderation and avoidance of controversy, but shows spirit in party strife. Much concerns Upfold's relations with other bishops and vigorous opinions about them, especially George W. Doane, William Meade, Levi S. Ives, Charles P. McIlvaine, Henry J. Whitehouse, and Joseph C. Talbot. He describes his tastes in architecture and projects for building churches. Collection contains frequent references to affairs of the General Theological Seminary, New York City, and Nashotah House, Wisconsin. Four letters of 1861 concern the Civil War, the state of the nation, and problems of the Episcopal Church. Among other points are condemnation of Bishop Leonidas Polk's military service for the Confederacy; fast days in Indiana; prayers to be used there; praise for Bishop Whittingham's Unionist stand in Maryland; funding of missionaries for Alabama; the need for moderation in dealing with the South; and hope for reunion of the Episcopal Churches in North and South after the war. Also includes references to family affairs and the bishop's declining years.

Title:
Jackson Kemper papers, 1811-1878.
Papers by and about the founder of the Episcopal Church in the Middle West span his career and deal with most of the concerns of the Church in this period as well as some of the events of his episcopate. They begin with his declining a call to St. Paul's Parish, Baltimore, 1813, and correspondence while rector of churches in Philadelphia, 1811-1831, chiefly with Bishop James Kemp, concerning such subjects as affairs of the General Theological Seminary, Bishop William White's papers, Kemper's ministry to Blacks in Philadelphia, his recommendation of the Reverend William Levington, first Negro Episcopal clergyman to come to Maryland, and other clergy matters. Four letters of 1832, written while rector of St. Paul's Church, Norwalk, Conn., include mention of family affairs and his possible election as Bishop of the proposed Diocese of the Southwest. In 1835 he is consecrated Bishop of Missouri and Indiana. Most of the papers date from Kemper's years as bishop and many are addressed to Bishop William Rollinson Whittingham. They deal with affairs of the Church in his vast territory, such as educational enterprises (especially Kemper College, Missouri, Jubilee College, Illinois, and Racine College, Wisconsin); Kemper's wish to establish a theological seminary, for the West; Nashotah House; activities and travels in Missouri and Iowa and controversies with Roman Catholic bishops there; missionary work in Minnesota, Kansas, and Nebraska; preparation of a Prayer Book for Oneida Indians; fund raising for western missions and institutions; life in Wisconsin and affairs of the Church there; and a host of clergymen, including James Lloyd Breck, James Abercrombie, William Adams, John V. Van Ingen, William E. Wyatt, and Dr. John Edward Garner. Kemper expresses high regard for Bishop Whittingham and offers to assist him, asks his advice on church practices, and comments on Whittingham's dispute with the Reverend Joseph Trapnell, Jr. There are also references to Kemper's visits to Maryland. Other subjects in these papers are business of the House of Bishops; matters before various General Conventions and views on the organization of General Conventions; the trials of Bishops Benjamin T. Onderdonk and Henry U. Onderdonk; opposition to the consecration of Bishop William C. Doane; and opinions about Bishops Philander Chase and Henry J. Whitehouse and Church affairs in Illinois, Kansas, and New York. Other letters concern relations with the Church of England, including the Lambeth Conference of 1867. There are references to Kemper's ill health and death, and subsequent papers concerning him.
