Manton Eastburn papers, 1825-1872.

Letters concern this leading Low Churchman while rector of the Church of the Ascension, New York City, 1827-1842; Bishop Coadjutor of the Eastern Diocese (which included all of New England except Connecticut), 1842; and Bishop of Massachusetts from 1843. Eastburn was elected Bishop of Maryland in 1838 but declined the call. Most papers relate to affairs in Massachusetts: Eastburn's conflicts with various High Churchmen; his presentment of the Reverend Oliver S. Prescott; troubles at the Church of the Advent, Boston; differences with Bishop Horatio Southgate; charges against Bishop George W. Doane; and similar matters. Eastburn disapproved of the mission to Turkey and establishing relations with the Orthodox Churches. Other items are his Civil War prayers and opposition to drafting clergymen for military service.
