Arthur Symons was an English critic and poet.
Epithet: poet and critic
Arthurs Symons was an accomplished poet, critic, short story writer, travel writer, playwright, and editor. An important figure in the development of Modernism, Symons helped acquaint British audiences with French aesthetic movements in art. A breakdown in 1908 impacted his work and has affected his literary reputation, but he remains a crucial link between 19th century tradition and 20th century innovation.
Arthur Symons was a Welsh poet, playwright, art and literary critic, essayist, translator, and biographer.
Arthur William Symons was born in 1865 and educated in Devonshire. He was a friend to many writers and artists of the “Gay Nineties” in England and France, and was himself an editor, critic, and poet who published several volumes of verse and criticism, including Symbolist Movement in Literature (1899). He contributed regularly to Athenaeum and Saturday and Fortnightly reviews, wrote plays, edited anthologies, and translated from six languages. He never fully recovered from a mental breakdown suffered in 1908. He died in 1945.
English author and critic.
Symons was a British poet and critic. Hutton was a British author, writing principally on Italy and Italian art.
Arthur Symons, poet, editor and literary critic, author of Symbolist Movement in Literature.
Welsh poet and critic.
Arthur William Symons was born at Milford Haven on 28 February 1865. At the age of twenty-one Symons wrote his first critical work An Introduction to the Study of Browning, 1886. From 1889 Symons made frequent trips to France and became interested in its literature and art. He contributed regularly to the Athenaeum, Saturday Review and Fortnightly Review. Symons published several books of poetry including Collected Poems 1900 and The Fool of the World and other Poems 1906. In 1906 he bought Island Cottage, at Wittersham, Kent, where he died on 22 January 1945.
Welsh poet, author, translator, playwright, and literary critic.
Arthur Symons was born in Wales; as a child, his family moved often, influencing his Bohemian lifestyle as an adult. He began writing poetry at a young age, and determined to be a writer. A series of essays on Robert Browning led to An Introduction to the Study of Browning, and his career developed quickly from this point. A member of the Rhymer's Club and the Browning Society, he thought of himself as a poet, but also wrote short stories, travel books, plays, literary criticism, and biography, and edited the avant-garde journal Savoy. His translations of French works helped introduce the Symbolist Movement to England, paving the way for Modernism; he had direct and indirect influence on Yeats, Joyce, Pound, and T.S. Eliot. A severe mental breakdown impacted his work and reputation, but he is widely regarded as a crucial force in the development of Modernism.
Arthur William Symons, poet, editor, and critic, was born in Milford Haven, England, on February 28, 1865. After ending his formal schooling at sixteen, Symons became active in London's literary world and also began the extensive travels in France which would ultimately influence his writing. He joined the Rhymers' Club (a group of poets including such figures as William Butler Yeats); edited a range of literary journals; and established himself as a cultural critic with the publication of his Symbolist Movement in Literature in 1899. He authored several volumes of poetry and criticism before suffering a mental collapse in 1908. The majority of his work after this period remained unpublished except for Confessions (1930). Symons died in Wittersham, Kent on January 22, 1945.
English poet and critic.

Thanking him for 50 francs and his letters, and mentioning that he has sent off the proofs of poems (for his Verses) as well as a new poem for the Savoy. Noting that his story (perhaps The Dying of Francis Donne) "does not march very well," but that he is "working away at it." Mentioning that he is glad Smithers will be "printing some copies of the Verses on Japanese vellum," hoping that Beardsley is recovering from his illness, and mentioning mutual acquaintances in London. Asking Smithers to send copies of his Verses "when the book of poems appears" to John Gray, M. le Vicomte de Lautrec, Lionel Johnson, M. Léopold Nelken, Mrs. William Wilde, Symons and a Japanese vellum copy to Mdlle Adelaide Foltinowicz. With a postscript on a sheet of notepaper mentioning that he becomes nervous about money when his bill is due around the 13th of the month and has thought of moving to a small island to further economize.

Conrad, Joseph, 1857-1924. Letters of Joseph Conrad, 1896-1913.
Title:
Letters of Joseph Conrad, 1896-1913.
In letters to Arthur Symons, Conrad writes about his health and that of his wife Jesse (George) Conrad and son Borys Conrad. He occasionally mentions his work, difficulties with publishers, and presents and visits from Symons. In letters, 1895-1923, to Edward Garnett, Conrad discusses his problems with "Outcast of the Islands," "Nigger of the Narcissus," "Lord Jim," and "Rescue" and asks for advice. He thanks Garnett for his assistance, encourages him to write and mentions criticism of his books. In letters, 1918-1920, to Sidney Colvin, Conrad tells of his son's gassing in the war, a bout with depression, and work on "The Rescue." There is also a letter, 1896 Sept. 24, to an unknown recipient thanking him for the "happy termination of that Cosmopolitan episode" and mentioning a new untitled short story. The collection also contains a typescript and printed pamphlet "Joseph Conrad, the history of his books," by Richard Henry Parnell Curle discussing facts behind Conrad's novels and short stories.

The Frederick R. Koch Collection consists of musical, literary, and historical materials collected by Frederick R. Koch, principally through purchases at public auctions, 1979-1986. Including individual items, concentrations of related materials, and several extensive archives, the collection is a broad and deep resource for study of the lives and works of a range of composers, authors, and other historical figures. Most materials are music manuscripts, literary manuscripts, drawings, and correspondence of European, English, and American composers, authors, and artists. Also present are historical manuscripts, photographs, albums, and other papers. While the contents of the collection span the seventeenth to twentieth centuries, most date from the nineteenth to early twentieth centuries, with particular strengths in French, Italian, German, and British music, French literature, and British art.

Symons, Arthur, 1865-1945. Arthurs Symons letter and essay, 1903.
Title:
Arthurs Symons letter and essay, 1903.
The collection consists of three items, a handwritten letter to Mr. Young, and an essay, A note on Germany, in both handwritten and typescript versions. The letter, 30 March 1903, is to Mr. Young, an American who sent Symons a photograph, presumably from his trip to Constantinople. Symons waxes eloquently about his own trip to Constantinople, confesses to mystification about copyright law, and comments on his recently finished play, Tristan and Iseult. The essay, A note on Germany, undated, presents critical opinions of German art and artists, and how they relate to the character of Germany.

Joyce, James, 1882-1941. Papers of James Joyce from the Harley K. Croessmann Collection, 1901-1959.
Title:
Papers of James Joyce from the Harley K. Croessmann Collection, 1901-1959.
The Croessmann Collection of James Joyce, assembled by Dr. Harley K. Croessmann, contains correspondence by and about Joyce and many manuscripts, notes, galley proofs, photographs, pictorial representations, sculpture, and ephemera, by Joyce and his friends, biographers, and critics. The collection is divided into four parts: the Herbert Gorman Papers, the Georg Goyert Papers, other Croessmann acquisitions, and Dr. Croessman's personal correspondence. The Herbert Gorman Papers contain materials relating to Gorman's 1924 biography of Joyce, including 330 original and transcribed letters, notes, drafts, typescripts, galley proofs, and manuscripts by Joyce and others. The correspondence consists of letters Gorman received from Joyce and others and transcriptions of Joyce letters for the biography. There are thirty letters and cards, dated 1925-1938, from Joyce to Gorman (and his wife), discussing corrections for the biography and for Joyce's manuscript "Sullivan." In addition, the correspondence contains letters from some of Joyce's friends and acquaintances, who helped Gorman by providing their recollections of Joyce and details about Dublin. These correspondents include: Alf Bergan, Harriet Weaver, T.S. Eliot, Arthur Symons, Oliver St. John Gogarty, Stanislaus Joyce, Eugene Jolas, James S. Starkey (Seumas O'Sullivan), and Padraic Colum. Many of the 150 transcriptions of Joyce letters were provided by Joyce's brother Stanislaus Joyce, and include letters from Joyce to his mother, his wife, and to Stanislaus. Though the originals of the Joyce-Stanislaus Joyce correspondence are housed in the Cornell Joyce Collection, some of the originals did not survive, making these transcriptions the only record of the contents of the missing letters. There are other transcribed letters, including some from John Quinn to Ezra Pound and Margaret Anderson about the Little Review--Ulysses obscenity proceedings. The collection contains valuable notes that Herbert Gorman took while reading Joyce's Paris Notebook (1902-1904), the original of which has not been found. The notes record Joyce's notes for Stephen Hero and Dubliners, as well as the author's aesthetic theories, among other material. Joyce's schema for Ulysses is here as are drafts of "From a Banned Writer to a Banned Singer" (originally titled "Sullivan") and "Epilogue to Ibsen's 'Ghosts'." The typescripts and galley proofs of Gorman's biography have autograph corrections by Gorman and suggested corrections by Joyce (in Paul Leon's hand).

Title:
Frederick R. Koch collection, 1640-1983.

John Quinn papers, 1901-1926
Title:
John Quinn papers 1901-1926
John Quinn (1870-1924) was a corporation lawyer in New York City who amassed an important private collection of paintings, drawings and sculpture as well as books and manuscripts of contemporary authors. In addition to promoting modern and avant-garde art in all forms, he particularly encouraged the work of members of the Irish Literary Revival, the artists of the Paris School, and English and American writers of his time. In 1923 he sold his manuscript and library holdings to subsidize his art collection. Collection consists mainly of correspondence, with writings, printed matter and photographs that document Quinn's artistic and political interests. Correspondence, 1901-1924, is with artists, art dealers, critics, poets, playwrights, booksellers, publishers, and members of his family. Files of letters and letterbooks contain correspondence relating to his interest in the artistic and literary scene in America and abroad, events in Ireland especially during the Home Rule movement, his purchase of paintings, sculpture, first editions and manuscripts of contemporary literature, and the sale of his library and manuscript collection. Also includes typescripts of literary works, typescript of the catalog of Quinn's art collection, ledgers, sales and exhibition catalogs, periodicals, and photographs of Quinn with individual artists and group portraits.
