Twenty issues of Caterpillar appeared between 1967 and 1973. It was published in New York and later in Sheman Oaks, Ca. In 1971, the magazine was anthologized by Doubleday-Anchor as: 'A Caterpillar Anthology.' Caterpillar has been regarded as one of the seminal literary magazines of its period. Containing what Hayden Carruth calls, "the best cross section we have of the Black Mountain movement from 1967 to 1971." Caterpillar's editor, Clayton Eshleman, is an established poet and also editor of the literary magazine: Sulfur.
Contemporary American poet, translator, critic, teacher, and editor. Eshleman has published more than 10 volumes of poetry and has translated the work of Cesar Vallejo, Aime Cesaire, and Antonin Artaud, among others. Eshleman has also been the editor of two influential small press magazines, Caterpillar, which was published in Manhattan and Sherman Oaks, Calif. during the 1960s and early 1970s, and Sulfur, based in Southern California for most of the 1970s and 1980s and then in Eastern Michigan.

Biography
Born June 1, 1935, in Indianapolis, Indiana, Clayton Eshleman is the only child of Gladys and Ira Eshleman. In 1953, Eshleman declared himself a music major at the University of Indiana but switched departments several times before receiving his BA in Philosophy in 1958. For three years he travelled in Mexico and Latin America. Returning to Indiana, he married Barbara Novak in the summer of 1961. Also in 1961, Eshleman's first book of poetry, Mexico and North, was printed privately in Japan. Eshleman spent three years in Japan, teaching English and studying Asian religion. He returned briefly to the United States and then moved, in 1965, to Lima, Peru. In Lima, in 1966, his only son, Matthew, was born. Eshleman returned to New York City in 1966 and soon separated from Barbara and Matthew. Two years of Reichian therapy followed.
In 1967, Eshleman published the first issue of CATERPILLAR, a journal of contemporary writing. He published twenty issues over a period of five years, ending the journal in 1973. While editing CATERPILLAR, Eshleman published his first major work, INDIANA (Black Sparrow Press, 1969) and his first major translation, Vallejo's POEMAS HUMANOS/HUMAN POEMS (Grove Press, 1968). Also during the CATERPILLAR years, Eshleman met his second wife Caryl Reiter and moved with her to Los Angeles in 1970.
The next years were most productive. Eshleman followed INDIANA by ALTARS (1971), COILS (1973), THE GULL WALL (1975), WHAT SHE MEANS (1978), HADES IN MANGANESE (1981), FRACTURE (1983), and, in 1986, THE NAME ENCANYONED RIVER: SELECTED POEMS, 1960 - 1985. All were published by Black Sparrow Press. Eshleman's creative design was now developed fully, imparting to his work quasi-Blakean completeness. In these and later works, written after he studied cave art at Lascaux, Eshleman recovered forms of the paleolithic imagination and practiced a poetics of what he called the lower body.
Eshleman's work as a translator continued throughout this period, resulting in his second major translation of Vallejo, SPAIN TAKE THIS CUP FROM ME (with Jose Rubia Barcia, 1974). Eshleman also produced translations of Antonin Artaud and Aime Cesaire: Artaud's TO HAVE DONE WITH THE JUDGEMENT OF GOD (1975), and ARTAUD THE MOMO (1976) (both with Norman Glass), and AIME CESAIRE: THE COLLECTED POETRY (1983, with Annette Smith). Eshleman's best-recognized achievement as translator was his 1978 collaboration with Jose Rubia Barcia on Vallejo's COMPLETE POSTHUMOUS POETRY, for which Eshleman received the 1979 National Book Award for Translations.
Eshleman has continued to write poetry and criticism, which appear in numerous magazines and anthologies, as well as his own books such as ANTIPHONAL SWING (1988), HOTEL CRO-MAGNON (1989), MISTRESS SPIRIT (1989), and NOVICES (1989). He also continues to translate the work of important poets such as Michel Deguy and Pablo Neruda.
Among Eshleman's most important contributions to contemporary American letters has been the editing of SULFUR, an influential journal of contemporary writing and art. Eshleman founded SULFUR in 1981 and edited 46 issues, ending the journal in the year 2000. The journal has disseminated works of canonized modernists like Ezra Pound, William Carlos Williams, and Charles Olson, but it is best noted for transgressing boundaries separating isolated groups of American and international writers. Under Eshleman's direction, SULFUR has provided a forum for important arguments among new American writers, extending the field of new American writing to its most articulate, controversial outposts.
Clayton Eshleman has been the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship in Poetry, two National Endowment for The Arts Poetry Fellowships, and two National Endowment for The Humanities Fellowships. He has held teaching positions at the California Institute of Technology and at UCLA Extension. Presently he teaches at Eastern Michigan University.
From his interest in paleolithic and somatic experience, Eshleman has led several expeditions to the Dordogne region of France. There he conducts research on paleolithic cave art. He is also an aficionado of the region's cuisine.
A complete listing of Eshleman's publications, as well as autobiographical notes, can be found in the "Personal Papers" series of this collection.
Additional biographical information can be found at Eshleman's website hosted by the Electronic Poetry Center at State University of New York at Buffalo: http://wings.buffalo.edu/epc/eshleman/eshlbio.html

Occasional letters are sent to either Peter Michelson or Jennifer Dunbar Dorn, but they are related either to the Rolling Stock or to the Dorn family in general. Significant correspondents include Amiri Baraka (LeRoi Jones), Lucia Berlin, Robert Bertholf, Stan and Jane Brakhage, Gordon Brotherston, Herb Butterfield, Tom Clark, Robert Creeley, John Daley, Donald Davie, Fielding Dawson, Clayton Eshleman, Willard Fox, Allen Ginsberg, Woody Haut, Victor Hernandez Cruz, Anselm Hollo Harry Hoogstraten, J. H. Innskeep, Ken Irby, Terry Jacobus, Joyce Johnson, Jack Kerouac, William Levy, Ellen Mann Michael McClure, Jim McCrary, Duncan McNaughton, Peter Michelson, Ken Mikolowski, Jeffrey Miller, John Moritz, Raymond Obermayr, Simone Okamura, Charles Olson, Joel Oppenheimer, Charles Potts, Jeremy Prynne, Tom Raworth, Joe Safdie, Ed Sanders, Nicholas Sedgwick, Al Simmons, Preman Sotomayor, David Southern, Anne Waldeman, Donald Wesling, John Wieners, John Wolff, Doug Woolf, and David Young. Extensive notes, drafts, and rewrites of Edward Dorn's poetry include Abhorrences, Book of Poems, Captain Jack's Chaps, Collected Gran Apacheria, Cosmology of Finding Your Spot, The Cycle, Geography, Gran Apacheria, Gunslinger, Hands Up!, North Atlantic Turbine, Recollections of Gran Apacheria, Songs Set Two: A Short Count, 24 Love Songs, and Yellow Lola. Similar materials exist for Edward Dorn's works of prose, including Abilene, Abilene, The Book of Daniel, Shoshoneans, Some Business Recently Transacted in the White World, Views, and What I See in the Maximus Poems. However, various published works by Edward Dorn appear to have left no drafts or revisions to examine. Personal information about Edward Dorn is found only in the correspondence or interviews—most of the published work on Edward Dorn concerns his work, not his personal life. Edward Dorn's publications Bean News and Rolling Stock include submissions by various authors and editorial notes. Broadsides include art and published poetry, as well as announcements of book signings or poetry readings. Taped interviews and recorded poetry readings comprise the majority of the AV materials. Photographs range from family snapshots to photos for illustrations or articles. Numerous books and periodicals have been removed from the collection and can be found in Archives & Special Collections at the Thomas J. Dodd Research Center. Check the library catalogue for call numbers.

New American Poetry Circuit Records., 1969-1974.
Title:
New American Poetry Circuit Records. 1969-1974.
San Francisco based cooperative that existed from 1969 to 1971, organized to arrange and promote poetry readings by its members; Jeanetta L. Jones, Director. Members included: D. Alexander, David Antin, Harvey Bialy, Paul Blackburn, Victor Coleman, Ed Dorn, Theodore Enslin, Clayton Eshleman, Larry Goodell, Jack Hirschman, Anselm Hollo, Kenneth Irby, Robert Kelly, Phillip Lamantia, Jackson MacLow, Michael McClure, Daphne Marlatt, David Meltzer, Jerome Rothenburg, Armand Schwerner, Charles Stein, Diane Wakoski. Among these poets were some of the most promising talents in literary circles at the time of the founding of the circuit, and Jeanetta had hoped to exploit their fame to the best advantage of all the poets in the co-op through some joint readings in some of the universities and colleges. Unfortunately, most of the lesser known poets could not garner the expected recognition and readings through the efforts of the circuit, and because of that Jeanetta felt compelled to give up at the end of the first season in 1971.

Title:
John Taggart Papers, 1962-2002
Papers of John Taggart, a contemporary American poet known for his formal and prosodic innovations. In addition to his long career as a professor at Shippensburg State University, Taggart has been involved in supporting literary communities and has written about key artistic and literary figures, in addition to producing his own creative work. The collection contains manuscripts and typescripts of Taggart's published and unpublished poetry, juvenilia from the 1960s and 70s, and fiction. The collection also contains many of his personal journals, notebooks, and loose notecards, as well as ongoing correspondence with writers, artists, and editors such as Theodore Enslin and Susan Howe. Taggart's work on translations of Sappho, Aeschylus, and Francis Ponge is also included. His nonfiction work consists mostly of essays, both published and unpublished, devoted to the work of individual writers and artists, such as George Oppen and Edward Hopper, as well as collective movements such as the Objectivist poets. Of note are included drafts of his articles "Walk Out: Rereading George Oppen" (CHICAGO REVIEW, 1998) and "George Oppen: One Line" (FLASHPOINT, 2002). The collection represents Taggart's ongoing poetic contributions, such as the collections DODEKA, CROSSES, WHEN THE SAINTS, and, most recently, PASTORELLES, as well as his lengthy continued correspondence with literary figures. Also of note are miscellaneous materials such as three-dimensional paper constructions as well as course materials related to his long tenure as a professor.

Joel Oppenheimer Papers, 1925-1988.
Title:
Joel Oppenheimer Papers 1925-1988.
Born in Yonkers in 1930, Joel Oppenheimer was a student of Charles Olson's at Black Mountain College from 1950-1953. He published over a dozen books of poetry, a play, a book on baseball, and was a columnist for the from 1968 to 1984. Oppenheimer was the first director of the St. Mark's Poetry Project in Greenwich Village (from 1966 to 1968) and was an active teacher of poetry throughout his life. He died of complications from cancer in 1988. The collection contains only a small amount of Oppenheimer's writing and correspondence prior to his time at Black Mountain College. The Black Mountain period itself is also represented somewhat poorly, although there are a few items of ephemera. The content of the collection becomes more comprehensive in the late 1950s and into the 1960s, with a substantial number of poetry manuscripts and a wider range of correspondence. While most of Oppenheimer's published poems are represented in the collection, it is often difficult to discern between first drafts and later copies. Village Voice

Parnassus: poetry in review records, 1971-1996
Title:
Parnassus: poetry in review records 1971-1996
Parnassus: Poetry in Review, a journal devoted to long reviews of new books of poetry and in depth retrospective essays covering the careers of particular poets, was founded in 1972 by Herbert Leibowitz (Editor) and Stanley Lewis (Publisher). In 1975, Leibowitz purchased the magazine from Lewis and set up the non-profit Poetry in Review Foundation whose only function was to publish Parnassus. Leibowitz assumed the duties of publisher in addition to his duties as editor. The Parnassus: Poetry in Review Records (1971-1996) consist mostly of general and editorial correspondence and revised and corrected typescripts, authors' galleys, and page proofs of pieces which appeared in the magazine. The correspondence also traces editor Herbert Leibowitz's personal and professional relationships with many notable and aspiring writers, poets, critics, artists, and academics. The records include additional editorial files, such as interoffice communications and readers' reports, typescripts of rejected or otherwise unpublished submissions to the magazine, art and photographs, administrative and financial files, and sound recordings.
