American writer, publisher, editor, political activist, and sister of the poet George Oppen, born 7 June 1918 in New York City.
Attended Univ. of California at Berkeley, the Sorbonne, and Univ. of San Francisco Law School. As co-publisher of the San Francisco review beginning in 1959, a strong advocate of contemporary writers such as Oppen, Charles Reznikoff, William Bronk, and James Hall.
