Pediatrician and author.
Benjamin Spock (1903-1998) was an American pediatrician, author, and peace activist. He is the author of the worldwide best-selling book Baby and Child Care .
Epithet: paediatrician
Before the widespread presence of television and radio, and to a lesser extent even after, wartime governments often used posters to broadcast to the civilian population important themes such as civil defense, recruitment, morale-boosting and fund-raising. In many cases notable artists would be engaged to create the illustrations.
World War I and World War II were particularly rich in these cheap and omnipresent pieces of propaganda. According to the Smithsonian Institution's "Produce for Victory: Posters on the American Home Front" :
Addressing every citizen as a combatant in the war of production, wartime posters united the power of art with the power of advertising to sell the idea that the factory and the home were also arenas of war. Poster campaigns aimed not only to increase productivity in factories, but also to enlarge people's views of their responsibilities in a time of total war... [P]eople would encounter posters in places that other media couldn't reach-schools, factories, offices, store windows, and other places outside the scope of paid advertising. Second, posters had democratic appeal-they could be made by anyone; they could be seen by all. Both medium and message spoke of democracy, which made posters ideal for expressing American war aims: why we fight, what we fight for.
Benjamin Spock was an American pediatrician best known for his book Baby and Child Care . He was also active in the anti-Vietnam War movements during the 1960's and early 1970's.

Erikson, Erik H. (Erik Homburger), 1902-1994. Erik H. and Joan M. Erikson papers, 1925-1985 (inclusive) 1960-1980 (bulk).
Title:
Erik H. and Joan M. Erikson papers, 1925-1985 (inclusive) 1960-1980 (bulk).
The papers contain correspondence, manuscripts, subject files, medical records (including notes, sketches, photographs and color slides), clippings, audio tapes of lectures, and awards. The papers also concern the work of Joan M. Erikson. The collection spans the American years (little pre-dates their 1933 arrival in the U.S.) and includes materials relating to all aspects of their careers. The correspondence section is primarily letters with friends and colleagues from the psychoanalytic/academic community; there are only a few family letters. There are lengthy files with his publisher, W.W. Norton & Company. Erikson's connection to the Austen Riggs Center (Stockbridge, Mass.) figures prominently in both the correspondence and in the clinical sections of the papers. Correspondents include: Peter Blos, Anna Freud, Robert P. Knight, Robert Jay Lifton, Margaret Mead, Lois Barclay Murphy, Benjamin Spock and numerous others. Of particular note in the composition section are the manuscripts of the various lecture series he delivered such as: lectures in India (1960s and 1970s), Gauss Seminars at Princeton University (1969), Godkin Lectures at Harvard University, Jefferson lectures for the NEH (1973), and Einstein lectures for a symposium in Jerusalem (1979). Research materials relating to cross-cultural studies of children, identity, human development, life cycle, and play assessment abound throughout. Although there are many manuscripts of his published works, there are no manuscripts for his major works: Childhood and Society, Young Man Luther or Gandhi's Truth. There are only a few items relating to his years as a University Professor at Harvard University. The "Compositions of a clinical nature" section contains observation notes, photographs, slides and sketches from various time periods including: Institute of Human Relations at Yale University (1930s); University of California--Berkeley (1940s); Austen Riggs Center (1950s-1970s); and reserch projects in India and Pakistan, the Charleston Playhouse, the Manhattan Country Day School and the Crow Indians (1960s-1970s), and many others.

A bacteriologist from MIT, Salvador E. Luria's work with Max Delbruck on bacteriophage demonstrated that bacterial resistance to certain phages arose through genetic mutations. Title:
Papers, 1949-1973 (bulk 1961-1973).
Collection comprises correspondence, research materials (printed materials, interviews, legal documents, newsletters, notes, etc.), manuscripts and galley proofs, advertising and publicity, reviews and reader responses--materials generated during the research, writing and publication of these three works. The research files contain a wealth of data on the three disparate topics: American death rituals and funeral industry; the conspiracy trial of Dr. Benjamin Spock, civil disobedience and Vietnam-era jurisprudence; and the American prison system, criminal justice and corrections. Only a small amount of personal materials (which fall within the context of Mitford's activities as author of said books) form a part of this collection. Records of the East Bay Memorial Association (1954-1962), of which Mitford's husband Robert Treuhaft was an officer, are also included in Series I.

Title:
Rabinowitz, Boudin, Standard, Krinsky and Lieberman: Legal Files Bulk, 1940-1985 1915-1992, (Bulk 1940-1985)
The legal firm of Rabinowitz, Boudin, Standard, Krinsky and Lieberman was a major force in civil liberties, civil rights and labor litigation from the 1950s through the 1990s. Senior partners Leonard Boudin and Victor Rabinowitz, along with Michael Standard, Michael Krinsky and Eric Lieberman, are associated with some of the most famous cases of the period, handling litigation and other legal work for Paul Robeson, Alger Hiss, James Peck, Dr. Benjamin Spock and many other notable figures. The firm represented numerous labor unions, most notably the American Communications Association, and assisted clients in passport cases, loss of employment and other legal matters arising from the targeting of individuals in government security investigations. The firm has been deeply involved in civil rights work and, during the Vietnam War, successfully defended, on First Amendment grounds, some of the leading opponents of the war, as well as draft resisters and conscientious objectors. The collection includes legal documents and background materials from many cases handled by the firm, as well as client files containing correspondence, reports, draft contracts and routine legal materials of all kinds. NOTE: This collection is housed offsite and advance notice is required for use.

Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
Title:
Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
The official organ of the Communist Party, USA, the Daily Worker's editorial positions reflected the policies of the Communist Party. At the same time the paper also attempted to speak to the broad left-wing community in the United States that included labor, civil rights, and peace activists, with stories covering a wide range of events, organizations and individuals in the United States and around the world. As a daily newspaper, it covered the major stories of the twentieth century. However, the paper always placed an emphasis on radical social movements, social and economic conditions particularly in working class and minority communities, poverty, labor struggles, racial discrimination, right wing extremism with an emphasis on fascist and Nazi movements, and of course the Soviet Union and the world-wide Communist movement. The paper has had a succession of names and has been published in varying frequences between daily to weekly over the course of its existence. In 2010 it ceased print publication and became an electronic, online-only, weekly publication titled the People's World. The bulk of the collection consists of printed photographic images produced through a variety of processes, collected by the photography editors of the Daily Worker and its successor newspapers as a means of maintaining an organized collection of images for use in publication. Images of many important people, groups and events associated with the CPUSA and the American Left are present in the collection, as well as images of a wide variety of people, subjects and events not explicitly linked with the CPUSA or Left politics.
