Matteson in the presence of T.A. Schomburg. An annotation on the verso notes that W.F. Ziegelaar retransferred the stock to the Maxwell Land Grant Company on December 19, 1896.

Summary: Collection consists primarily of the originals and photocopies of land records pertaining to San Miguel del Bado, San Jose, and Pecos, New Mexico (1803-1914). Subjects of note are the Pecos Pueblo Grant (1869-1914), and the San Miguel del Bado Grant (1910). Included is Frank Springer's opinion on the matter of title of the Pecos Grant (1886). Also included are the correspondence of the Steins with Mr. and Mrs. David Petitt and Our Lady of Victory Missionary Sisters (1982-1993), Thomas A. Parker's engineering notes (1931), and architectural drawings for the construction of Carriage House and for the restoration of the Hedgecock Building (1977) both in Las Vegas, New Mexico.

Henderson, Alice Corbin, 1881-1949. Papers, 1861-1987 (bulk 1920-1949).

Title: Papers, 1861-1987 (bulk 1920-1949).

The collection comprises correspondence, literary manuscripts, notes and notebooks, clippings, galley proofs, photographs, and date books ranging in date from 1861-1987, reflecting various aspects of not only Henderson's life, but also those of her husband, artist and architect William Penhallow Henderson, and her daughter, Alice Oliver Henderson Evans Rossin Colquitt. Henderson's published and unpublished works are represented by transcripts, notes, galley proofs, and clippings, and her involvement with Poetry: A Magazine of Verse (1912-22) and the Poetry anthologies are reflected in correspondence with editor Harriet Monroe, Ezra Pound, and attorney Roberts Walker. Other correspondents include: Witter Bynner, D.H. and Frieda Lawrence, Vachel Lindsay, Mary Austin, Edgar Lee Masters, Haniel Long, Carl Sandburg, and Ralph Fletcher Seymour, among others. There is extensive family correspondence, notably with Mabel Dodge Luhan, especially during periods of financial and marital difficulity in the 1930s. After Alice and William Henderson moved to Santa Fe, NM, in 1916, they became interested in Native American issues, especially those surrounding the local Navajos. Through their individual talents, the Hendersons founded or supported projects such as the Poet's Round-up, the Navajo House of Religion (now the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian), the Eugene Manlove Rhodes Memorial Association, the Writer's Edition, the Works Progress Administration Federal Writers' Project guide to New Mexico, and the Pueblo-Spanish Building Company, all of which are represented in the collection. Alice Henderson Rossin continued much of her parents' work. She revived the Poet's Round-up in 1968, exhibited her father's art works, and worked with both of her parents' biographers. Her personal correspondence, primarily from the 1930s, includes letters from King Vidor, Lady Bird Johnson, Oliver La Farge, R.F. Seymour, and Jouett and Dorothea Todd, as well as family members. Rossin served as a board member of the Museum of New Mexico Foundation from 1962-78. Family correspondence that she added to this collection includes letters between her second mother-in-law, Clara Rossin, and composer Ernest Bloch, music critic Lawrence Gilman, and violinist Joseph Szigeti, 1912-28.

Included in this edition is a selection of personal and business correspondence, articles related to the Bar and the Maxwell Land Grant case, various political and educational addresses, articles about and related to Frank Springer including his involvement with the Museum of New Mexico art museum (Sante Fe) and the New Mexico Normal School, as well as scientific reviews, family information, and two black and white photographs of an older Frank Springer. In addition to the bound edition, are loose clippings, correspondence, and a bibliography of Frank Springer.

Summary: Collection consists of Bartlett's official correspondence as Solicitor General of the Territory of New Mexico (1890- 1902); and professional papers from his legal practice (1880-1904). Solicitor General correspondence includes letters received from Frank Springer, Elfego Baca, Frederick Muller, and Pinkerton's National Detective Agency concerning Charles Siringo. Topics covered in the correspondence include the Rough Riders, Jicarilla Apaches, territorial penitentiary, Fort Marcy, and the execution of Blackjack Ketchum. Summary: Collection consists of the family correspondence and papers of Frank Springer, 1899-1924. Family correspondence contains several letters received by Springer from his children, 1917-1918. Springer's papers represent the bulk of the collection and reflect his societal position as benefactor and promoter of the Museum of New Mexico, lawyer, and self-educated paleontologist. Papers of The Museum of New Mexico (1917- 1921) include: financial reports and documents concerning the Museum's efforts to create a war memorial out of the old Santa Fe armory building. These war memorial documents contain: originals and copies of legislation to create the war memorial and its administrative branch, the Board of Historical Services, and to appropriate funds to build a new arsenal and armory. Addresses and a paper concerning World War I, that were delivered at various commencements, dedications, and memorials, are included (1917- 1919). Clippings from primarily New Mexico newspapers discuss Springer's activities as lawyer for the Maxwell Land Grant Company; Theodore Roosevelt and the Rough Riders; and Springer's fossil collection. Pamphlets and programs contain: Springer's work on Crinoid fossils, his educational addresses; a eulogy for William McKinley; a memorial for Springer's son Henry S. Springer; and various other pamphlets. Also included are: a copy of Springer's bibliography; copies of the Las Vegas Daily Optic and the Santa Fe New Mexican newspapers; and a photograph of the ground plan for the New Mexico Normal University, Las Vegas, New Mexico.

Summary: Collection consists of the Rito de los Frijoles Gazette in two volumes. Volume 1, July 10 1910 and Volume 2, 1911 and the Rito de los Frijoles Gazette magazine supplement, to August 22, 1911. The volumes appear to be written by different authors who were present at the Rito de los Frijoles camp, during the 1910 and 1911 excavations at what is now Bandelier National Monument. In each volume, there are handwritten stories, drawings, poems, newspaper articles, and descriptions of excavations by members of the camp. Most of this material is undated. Many of the stories appear on letterhead of the Archaeological Institute of America, School of American Archaeology, Santa Fe, New Mexico. Charles F. Lummis and Frank Springer authored some of the material, but most of the others are either unidentified or are signed by initials of nicknames only. Other prominent persons mentioned in the articles were Donald Beauregard, Alice C. Fletcher, Edgar L. Hewett, Neil M. Judd, Barbara Friere-Marreco, Sylvanus G. Morley, Joseph A. Munk, and Jesse Nusbaum.

Summary: Collection consists of the personal and professional papers of Edgar L. Hewett as an archaeologist, educator, and director of the Museum of New Mexico and the School of American Archaeology (later the School of American Research), 1891-1960. The first series of Hewett papers (1905-1949) contain: correspondence with several persons and organizations; financial records for the museum and school; records and correspondence of Hewett's excavations in Quirigua, Guatemala; Santa Fe Fiesta records; Panama-California Exposition records; manuscripts, including his students' papers; personal financial records; scrapbooks, which include museum visitor registers, accounting and collection ledgers and other organization's ledgers; and memorabilia. The second series of Hewett papers (1928-1929) consists primarily of correspondence from applicants concerning admittance to the School of American Archaeology. Miscellaneous papers include correspondence and manuscript pages that discuss Southwest archaeological issues. The addendum series consists of Hewett's working files: administrative and budget records for the museum; reports from the assistant director of the school; correspondence; materials from the American Institution of Archaeology; lecture notes; and eulogies. The School of American Research papers contain: correspondence with several New Mexicans, such as Frank Springer; lecture notes and articles of E. Winnifred Pitkin, MD; photographs, negatives, and articles on Mayan civilization; genealogical material of Mrs. Donizetta Hewett; and miscellaneous records from Hewett's office.

Summary: Collection consists of Lummis's journals and correspondence, as well as articles by Lummis and clippings on Pueblo Indian topics. The journals consist of typed carbon copies of very detailed entries from 1917 to 1920. The correspondence is from 1891 to 1912 and consists primarily of carbon copies of typed letters sent by Lummis to various individuals, including his daughter Turbese and son Keith, as well as Eugene Manlove Rhodes, John Muir, Ernest T. Seton, and Frank Springer. On the reverse of most of the letters are carbon copies of letters involving various institutions associated with Lummis, including the Southwest Museum and Los Angeles Public Library. Correspondence also includes letters received from various publishers and friends, including Amado Chaves of New Mexico.
