Gleason, Herbert Wendell, 1855-1937. Herbert Wendell Gleason photographic negatives of Arnold Arboretum, Massachusetts Horticultural Society, Harvard University, New England Flower Shows, and nurseries, 1909-1937.
Title:
Herbert Wendell Gleason photographic negatives of Arnold Arboretum, Massachusetts Horticultural Society, Harvard University, New England Flower Shows, and nurseries, 1909-1937.
The Arnold Arboretum subseries contains over 350 botanical images, including flowers, plants, and trees photographed from 1909-1937. Gleason's earliest photographs include views of ice-coated bushes and trees taken in 1901. A large proportion of the negatives date between 1934 and 1936, the years when Gleason was employed as an official photographer for the Arboretum. Highlights include over 120 lilac images ("Jan van Tol," "Paul Thirion," "Leon Mathieu," and others). The Massachusetts Horticultural Society annual exhibits (1921-1936) include: flower exhibits, bulb garden exhibits, flower pictures, vegetable exhibits, window exhibits, and Christmas wreaths. The names associated with the exhibits include many prominent individuals and garden clubs. Gleason copied twelve rose prints from the Massachusetts Horticultural Society. Harvard University botanical images include Erigeron Muirii at the Gray Herbarium, and Dombeya Wallich at the Harvard Botanical Garden. Gleason photographed New England flower shows from 1926-1935. Shows include: Chestnut Hill, MA, Cohasset, MA, North Andover, MA, Newport, RI, and Providence, RI. The flower shows highlight the gardens of many prominent individuals. Gleason sold two prints to Garden Digest (VI. F.1929.11 FILM and VI. H.1934.1 FILM).

Title:
Herbert Wendell Gleason photographic negatives of Oregon and Washington, 1905-1917.
Oregon images consists of Portland scenes taken between 1905 and 1917. Subjects include Gleason's visit to the Lewis and Clark Exposition (official name was the Lewis and Clark Centennial and American Pacific Exposition and Oriental Fair) during the summer of 1905. The exposition celebrated the 100th anniversary of Meriweather Lewis and William Clark's exploration of the Pacific Northwest. The Exposition covered 182 acres of land and 220 acres of water. Gleason photographed the Bridge of Nations, said to be the longest wooden bridge of its kind (2,000 foot span), and the U.S. Government Building. The Bridge crossed Guild's Lake connecting the mainland to a peninsular where the U.S. Government Building stood over 260 feet high. Other images include a special pavilion (Japan), cowboy sculpture, and an amusement ride. Portland images include a view of Mt. Rainier taken from a train; a group of climbers (for Mt. Hood) posing outside the Hotel Portland; a view up the Willamette River from Boulevard Drive; Washington Park including the statues of "Sacajawea" and "Welcome to the White Man;" the Eagle Fish Hatchery and other sites along the Columbia Highway (the first modern highway constructed in the Pacific Northwest); views of the Columbia River, and private residences (including C.H. Sholes' residence). Washington subjects include: crevasses on Sholes Glacier (Mt. Baker); Pioneer Square (Seattle's original downtown) including the Totem Pole (replica of a Tlingit work) and First Street; distant views of Mt. Rainier from Tacoma; portraits of George Rounds and family (Mrs. Gleason's relatives); shots of a lava flow taken from a train in eastern Washington; and botanical images (Cassiope mertensiana and Bryabthus empetriformis).

Title:
Series 17 Herbert Wendell Gleason collection of lantern slides, 1906 and undated.
The lantern slides are positive images on glass and measure 3 1/4 inches x 4 inches. All slides but one are identified though only one is dated. Most of the slides are black and white, but seventeen are hand-colored (possibly by Mrs. Gleason). Botanicals include: flowers and trees. Landscapes include shots of stunted pines, wind-bent pines, and panoramic views of mountains in Colorado. One unusual slide is a view of the Continental Divide taken from an airplane. Homes and Gardens include views of prominent gardens (found in Series V of Robbins-Mills Collection) and several images of the Smiley's residence in Redlands, CA (see also Series X). Miscellaneous slides include a Burbank manuscript page. Gleason's slide lectures were the product of his many years of travel and study of nature. The slides in this series offer but a fragmentary glimpse of the hundreds of images Gleason used in his illustrated lectures.

Century Company records
Title:
Century Company records
The Century Company published the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, which was widely regarded as the best general periodical of its time, performing a role as cultural arbiter during the 1880s and 1890s. It was founded in New York City in 1881 and also published the children's magazine St. Nicholas, dictionaries, and books. The Century Company records date from 1870 to the 1930s and chiefly contain correspondence with contributors, readers, public figures, and literary agents. A number of manuscripts and proofs in the collection are extensively edited and taken with annotations on letters provide a detailed record of the outlook, standards, and functions of the company.

Gleason, Herbert Wendell, 1855-1937. Herbert Wendell Gleason photographic negatives of Minnesota, Isle Royale, and Michigan, 1899-1937.
Title:
Herbert Wendell Gleason photographic negatives of Minnesota, Isle Royale, and Michigan, 1899-1937.
Includes first recorded photograph taken by Gleason on February 2, 1899-"Interior of Parlor and Hall, 1815 Columbus Av., Minneapolis, February 2, 1899." The Gleasons lived at this address in 1899 before their return to Boston the same year. Gleason also photographed his mother-in-law's home-"Mrs. Round's House, 728 E. 18th St., Minneapolis, August 18, 1899." Mrs. Rounds sold her house in Malden, Mass. in 1888 and moved to Minneapolis. The Gleasons lived with Mrs. Rounds from 1890-1897 along with Mrs. Gleason's sister Ethel and brother Fred. Of particular interest are images of the North Shore of Lake Superior taken in February 1899. Gleason provides an interesting description of this trip along the North Shore in his article "A Winter Ramble with a Camera" (Outing, January 1900). Among the North Shore images is "Logging Train on Trestle, Alger Camp No. 1, Knife River, February 8, 1899." During the heyday of logging in this area, the Alger Smith Lumber Company was one of the principal log suppliers to the sawmills in Duluth. Other North Shore images include the village of Grand Marais (views of fisherman huts, Hog Back, and an Indian grave); thomsonite rock, found locally on the beaches at Grand Marais; and surf views. Gleason photographed Isle Royale (established as a national park in 1940) and other islands in Lake Superior from the deck of the steamship "Dixon," which traveled Lake Superior between Duluth and Port Arthur and around Isle Royale carrying passengers, mail, supplies, and cargoes of fish. Included in the Isle Royale photographs are Siskiwit Light and Rock Harbor Light. Other images in the series include a view of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. from a train; Lester River and Lester Park in Duluth, Minn.; historic Fort Snelling (built in 1825 to control trade, exploration, and settlement along the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers), the Indian Mounds, and Soldiers' Home in St. Paul, Minn. The few mounds in Gleason's pictures are a remnant of what was once a large network of ancient Native American burial mounds in the area. Identified portraits include: Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert, Miss Janney, and Mrs. McKay and her daughter. Gleason made copies of historical images, including a painting of St. Anthony Falls in Minneapolis by Ferdinand Reichardt at the Minnesota Historical Society, and illustrations from books (Kirk's Illustrated History of Minnesota and Minnesota in Three Centuries), and the Minnesota History Magazine.
