Series 17 Herbert Wendell Gleason collection of lantern slides, 1906 and undated.

The lantern slides are positive images on glass and measure 3 1/4 inches x 4 inches. All slides but one are identified though only one is dated. Most of the slides are black and white, but seventeen are hand-colored (possibly by Mrs. Gleason). Botanicals include: flowers and trees. Landscapes include shots of stunted pines, wind-bent pines, and panoramic views of mountains in Colorado. One unusual slide is a view of the Continental Divide taken from an airplane. Homes and Gardens include views of prominent gardens (found in Series V of Robbins-Mills Collection) and several images of the Smiley's residence in Redlands, CA (see also Series X). Miscellaneous slides include a Burbank manuscript page. Gleason's slide lectures were the product of his many years of travel and study of nature. The slides in this series offer but a fragmentary glimpse of the hundreds of images Gleason used in his illustrated lectures.

135 slides : lantern, col. and B & W ; 13 x 18 cm.
