Collection mainly consists of Gregorie's transcriptions of the correspondence of Gen. Thomas Sumter dating from 1763 to 1832 (bulk 1779-1800), taken from various sources, including the Horatio Gates papers in the New-York Historical Society, the Thomas Sumter papers in the Library of Congress, and the Draper Collection in the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. Letters written during the Revolutionary War concern military operations mainly in South Carolina; correspondents of this period include General DeKalb, Major Thomas Pinckney, Gen. Horatio Gates, William Smallwood, John Rutledge, and Gen. Nathanael Greene. Much postwar correspondence concerns financial, legal, and political matters. Includes a transcript of Thomas Sumter's speech (1798) about a provisional army. Also noteworthy are his letters concerning John C. Calhoun (1824). Several letters dating to the 1830s deal with the issues of states' rights and nullification, one of which (published in newspapers, and possibly written or edited by his grandson Thomas De Lage Sumter) speaks of a political party "in favor of a national consolidated government...no longer in harmony with the spirit of our constitution" (25 Dec. 1830). In a letter by Thomas Sumter published as an open letter (Nov. 1831), he characterizes this party as a "relentless majority, whose object is to prostrate, at their feet, the interests of the Southern States. I have known this party from the date of the Constitution, and believe me...every act of theirs has hitherto marked them out, as hostile to our interests and to those principles of liberty, for which so many eminent men have suffered." Also included are two letters (1930 and 1931) to Gregorie regarding papers of Thomas Sumter in the Clements Library at the University of Michigan and in the New York Public Library.

The collection contains primarily the papers of General Henry "Light Horse Hary" Lee, Major Henry Lee, Charles Carter Lee, and John Penn Lee. The General Henry Lee papers, 1768-1816 (reel 1) consist mainly of correspondence in relating to the Revolutionary War period in connection with his MEMOIRS OF THE WAR IN THE SOUTHERN DEPARTMENT OF THE UNITED STATES. In addition, there are letters written from the West Indies where Lee went to regain his health. The Major Henry Lee papers, 1813-1841 (reels 1 & 2) consist primarily of correspondence during the 1830's when he was living in Europe. Family, military, and political figures are among the correspondents. The Charles Carter Lee papers, 1813-1870 (reels 3-12), constitute the bulk of the entire collection. They consist of correspondence, poetry, legal and financial papers, notes for memoirs, speeches, literary works, etc. Correspondents include many political figures from the Jackson era. There is also extensive correspondence with Lee's half brother, Major Henry Lee, and his secretary, George Frederick Brown. In the course of his correspondence, nearly all of the prominent political figures of the period are mentioned. The John Penn Lee papers, 1882-1931 consist of miscellaneous printed matter, routine legal papers, business papers of the law firm of Dillard and Lee, Rocky Mount, Virginia and unsorted manuscripts.

(1959, re career of Gen. Francis Marion); and Gamecock... (1961, re life of Gen. Thomas Sumter). Includes letter, 21 Oct. 1978, Marion, S.C., to Rita [Horton McDavid], re trips he and his wife had made to visit family members in Utah, Texas, and New Orleans and explaining that his health had forced him to cancel autograph parties for the book, Ninety Six: the Struggle for the South Carolina Back Country (1978), even though he understood that "the book is selling very well." A separate run of correspondence, 1941-1969, (also in Box 1) consists of 420 letters, chiefly carbon copies of outgoing letters from R.D. Bass discussing personal, family, and professional matters. Bound items include: May 1925 issue of The Carolinian containing Bass' poem "A Spring Sunset"; notebook, ca. 1925, with class notes taken by Bass in George A. Wauchope's Shakespeare course at the University of South Carolina; 2 scrapbooks, 1927-1983 and 1975-1984, containing biographical information and obituaries, information re Bass' induction into the South Carolina Hall of Fame, certificates of award, publicity releases and book reviews re the Ninety Six book, and correspondence with Banastre Tarleton Tinling and editors at Henry Holt & Co., Inc., and Holt, Rinehart & Winston, Inc.; and 3 scrapbooks, 1955-1972, containing pictures, correspondence, reviews, and newspaper clippings re The Green Dragoon (1955-1958), Swamp Fox (1959-1960), and Gamecock (1960-1972). Contains specimen correspondence of President Dwight D. Eisenhower (29 May 1959), who wrote to thank Bass for inscribed copies of The Green Dragoon and Swamp Fox, and Walt Disney (16 Dec. 1959), who replied to a letter from Bass re "Swamp Fox," the Disney series inspired by Francis Marion's military service. The Swamp Fox series aired on Disney's television show, 1959-1961, and Walt Disney Productions marketed various related products, two of which are included in Box 1: a Swamp Fox comic book (issue of Mar.-May 1961) and sheet music (1959) by the Walt Disney Corporation. Both items feature photographs of actor Leslie Nielsen in character as Marion. Comic book titled: "Swamp Fox: a Redcoat turns Rebel"; and sheet music, "From the Walt Disney ABC-TV Production... Swamp Fox / words by Lew Foster, music by Buddy Baker" (1959).

The collection also contains a letter, 1770 March 1, from Andrew Lewis, Augusta County, Va., to George Washington, regarding land claims of soldiers who had served under Washington in 1756. The collection also contains draft notes from a speech, 1820, of John Randolph, with corrections attributed to Thomas Jefferson, regarding funerals at public expense; accompanied by Jefferson's half-leaf note regarding an insertion. The collection also contains an account, 1775, of the sales of the estate of William Flood of Westmoreland County, Va., including slaves; The collection also contains orders, 1780 October 14, Horatio Gates to Col. Semp, to survey the coast of Virginia in expectation of the French fleet, with further instructions to report immediately to Jefferson any encounter with an allied or enemy fleet with their numbers, strength, and probable destination; together with a list of officers appointed by Congress. The collection also contains a list, ca. 1780, of Continental Army generals appointed by Congress. The collection also contains 34 replies to invitations issued by James Madison, 1800-1817. The collection also includes a draft copy of a letter, 1780 August 23, from Abner Nash, Hillsborough, N.C., regarding the strategy and conduct of the American troops at the Battle of Camden and the defeat of Thomas Sumter at the Battle of Hanging Rock.
