Merchant and magistrate of Stateburg, in "Claremont County, S.C." [later Sumter District, S.C.; originally this area within jurisdiction of "Camden District," which included all present counties between Clarendon and York]; member of Claremont Society; father of James, b. 1786, and Mary Elizabeth, b. 1788; married, 1785, to Mary Andrews Morrell (1766-1790).
