Correspondence, travel diaries, legal, financial, and business papers, and maps, newspaper clippings, and other papers documenting Butler's involvement in New York politics and his interest in such matters as anti-Masonry, public debts in Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan, loans to farmers by the New York Life Insurance and Trust Company, legal cases (particularly the William Morgan kidnapping), and improvements in transportation, especially in roads, canals, and railroads.

Robert Troup papers, 1771-1870

Title: Robert Troup papers 1771-1870

Robert Troup (1757-1832) was a lawyer and land agent from New York State. He served as an officer with the American army during the Revolution, practiced law in Albany and New York City, was elected to the State Assembly, and in 1796 was appointed judge of the United States district court of New York. From 1801 to 1832 he was land agent of the Pulteney Estate of England for properties in western New York. Collection consists of the papers of Robert Troup as well as those of his sons, Charles G. Troup and Robert R. Troup. Robert Troup's papers mainly concern his career as a lawyer and administrator of estates and include correspondence, registers of cases, legal documents, and account books for the Pulteney Estate. Charles G. Troup was associated with his father in the practice of law and his papers contain correspondence, notebooks of law lectures, commonplace books, account books, financial papers, and household accounts. Robert R. Troup's papers reflect his business interests and include ledgers and other account books.

The Bronson family included Isaac Bronson (1760-1838), of New York City and Greenfield, Conn., and his sons Arthur (1801-1844), Frederic (1802-1868) and Oliver (1799-1875), who aided him in his business as a land speculator, money-lender and promoter of westward expansion. Collection consists of correspondence, accounts, records of loans and mortgages, deeds, maps, and other land, business and personal papers of Isaac Bronson and his sons Arthur, Frederic and Oliver. Includes material on land in Jefferson County, N.Y., North Carolina and elsewhere, banks and banking, currency, railroad bonds, and the Panic of 1837. Persons represented include the Baring Brothers of London, James Lefferts Brinckerhoff, Charlotte Brinckerhoff Bronson, Ethel Bronson, C.C. Cambreleng, James B. Murray, Robert Livingston Pell, and Robert Troup.

In Philadelphia in September of 1795, two agents, Andrew Baird and Lewis Baird, approached Tench Coxe, assistant to Alexander Hamilton, Treasurer of the United States under the Jefferson administration regarding land holdings of some half million acres in western North Carolina. The Baird agents represented the interests of the Rutherford Land Company that consisted of some 18 members or Trustees, including William W. Erwin , James Greenlee, and others. The Rutherford Land Company was apparently been created by Greenlee who owned extensive tracts in Burke County, North Carolina. Andrew Baird, a former New Jersey iron master, knew members of the Coxe family and this possibly accounts for the primary interest in Coxe as an investor. The Bairds offered Coxe an opportunity to purchase some or all of the land holdings of the Company, described as "east of the Blue Ridge Mountains" for 9 cents an acre. The tracts Tench Coxe eventually purchased, however, appear to have included land in present day Rutherford County, Polk County, Henderson County, Cleveland County, McDowell County and in Buncombe County. [William W. Ervin and Andrew Baird to Coxe, Sept. 17, 1795, Coxe Papers.] Tench Coxe through a series of purchases obtained some 400,000 acres in western North Carolina. He managed to retain many of the land holdings for some twenty years by placing his real estate into a land trust. The first trust was held by William Tilghman, a trusted cousin and family lawyer, another friend and relative Abraham Kintzing, and a close relative, Richard Coxe, his wife's brother. It is believed that Pierre-Estienne DuPonceau, a family friend and lawyer was also appointed a trustee at this time.  This collection details the Tench Coxe purchase, the subsequent trusteeships and ownerships, the ensuing financial intrigue, and the substantial survey activity generated by various real estate activities. The United States Sanitary Commission established the Army and Navy Claim Agency (ANCA) in Washington, D.C. on April 1, 1864 to serve as the USSC’s central office to assist Union soldiers, sailors, and their families in prosecuting claims on the federal government for pensions, back pay, bounty, commutation of rations, prize money, and other benefits, without cost. The Army and Navy Claim Agency Archives comprise the records of the Army and Navy Claim Agency; the records of the Pension Agency, its predecessor organization; the registers and cash books of its subsidiary local agencies; and the records of two quasi-independent USSC claim agencies whose origins predate the establishment of the Army and Navy Claim Agency: the Protective War Claim Association of the State of New York, located in New York City, and the Protective War Claim and Pension Agency, located in Philadelphia.

In addition to the general family corespondence are the following: typescript of a letterbook, 1732-1735, kept by James Murray, who, at this time, was an apprentice to the West India merchant William Dunbar in London; correspondence, 1761-1787, for Dr. John Murray; typescript of correspondence pertaining to the captivity of Jeremiah Powell, son of William Dummer Powell, chief justice of Upper Canada, who was captured by the Spanish while taking part in the Miranda expedition (dated 1805-1807); correspondence between James B. Murray and Maria Bronson, prior to and after their marriage; correspondence of Isaac Bronson and the Bronson family; correspondence of Edward Ingersoll and family, including a typescript of letters from Edward Ingersoll to James B. Murray during 1812-1825; diary of James B. Murray; and correspondence of Bronson Murray, some dealing with farming in Illinois, but mostly written during his time as a sutler with the 11th Regiment, Infantry, describing life in Washington during the war, an interview with Lincoln, a troop voyage from Alexandria to Fort Monroe, and other experiences of his service in Virginia. The collection also contains a few family photographs.
