The collection consists of an extensive amount of correspondence with the leading musical figures of the day; posters, concert advertisements and programs from Sembrich (and other) performances throughout her career; and memorabilia including an autograph album with signatures and drawings of famous musicians and others. Series IX "Photographs" also includes some 15-20 original graphic art works among its 2284 items. Subjects include Sembrich, places she lived, places she performed, and people with whom she performed. The sheet music and musical scores (Series X) are currently being processed.

Edith Evans Braun collection, 1916-1976

Title: Edith Evans Braun collection 1916-1976

The Edith Evans Braun Collection highlights the history of American music in the early and mid twentieth century. The collection shows various details of the lives and careers of notable music figures of the period through the memoirs and diaries of Edith Evans Braun, a pianist and director at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Of strong interest in the collection are the music manuscript sketches by emerging composers (Deems Taylor, Samuel Barber) of the period, and signed and dedicated published scores. There are also letters and photographs from Taylor, Barber, Gian Carlo Menotti, Josef Hoffman, and others. The period covered in the collection is from 1916 to 1971.

In addition to Houdini, prominent performers whose autographed portraits are featured in the collection include Julian Eltidge, Douglas Fairbanks, Clark Gable, Mary Pickford, Lillian Russell, Ernesite Schumann-Heinck, Laurette Taylor, and Sophie Tucker, among others. Some autographs are dated; other dates listed are dates the photographs were made. The photographers represented include many studios specializing in publicity portraits of performers throughout the United States. Includes film stills.

Concert and recording contracts, some with related correspondence; real estate contracts, deeds, and correspondence; and other financial papers. Most concert contracts were made by Schumann-Heink through her agent, Wolfsohn Musical Bureau, for concerts in various cities in the Eastern and Midwestern United States, 1912-1914. Also present are a few contracts and related papers concerning the Victor Talking Machine Company, 1906-1915; the Cincinnati Musical Festival Association, 1913; and baritone Edward J. McNamara, 1914. Real estate documents, 1888-1920, include contracts relating to construction of a house in San Diego, California; deeds for property in Chicago, Illinois; and a few letters and financial documents concerning other holdings in California and New York City Included is a small amount of correspondence with artist manager L. E. Behymer and Schumann-Heink's son Hans Heink. Financial papers, 1913-1919, include lists of Schumann-Heink's financial assets, a will and codicil, and other papers relating to investments. Also present is correspondence with the Overman Tire Company, concerning a business owned by Schumann-Heink's son, Henry Schumann-Heink.
