Sculptor; Bolton Landing, N.Y.
Smith's Medals for Dishonor, completed in 1940, were explicit statements of protest against the horrors of war and violence. Smith befriended the writers, Williams Blake and his wife Christina Stead, after having read and been influenced by Blake's novel, THE PAINTER AND THE LADY. Dorothy Dehner, painter and sculptor, was Smith's first wife. They were married in 1927 and divorced in 1952. ART FOR THE MILLIONS, edited by Francis V. O'Connor, was originally intended to be published by the Federal Art Project but went unfinished. O'Connor took up the project and completed it in 1972.
Sculptor; Bolton Landing, N.Y.
Began his career as a painter. Studied at Art Students League. Was one of the first sculptors to develop a uniquely American abstract style. Worked in monumental style, incorporating painted metal and welding techniques into his work. Smith died in an automobile accident in May 1965.

The papers of Mildred Constantine measure 5.3 linear feet and are dated 1945-2008. Subject files, writings, photographs, and a scrapbook provide an overview of her curatorial work in the Architecture and Design department of the Museum of Modern Art, and subsequent activities as an independent curator, and art consultant. Especially well documented is the book <emph render="italic">Whole Cloth</emph> that she wrote with Laurel Reuter.Correspondence, though mostly business related, often touches on personal matters since many of the artists and art world figures with whom she corresponded were also friends. She also corresponded with many art institutions and organizations, among them the Cleveland Museum of Art, Independent International Design Conference, El Museo del Barrio, Museum of New Mexico, Ohio State University, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Estate of David Smith.Subject files reflect Constantine's activities and interests. A large portion of this series concerns <emph render="italic">Whole Cloth</emph>, a book written with Laurel Reuter that presents an historical look at how artists have used cloth in their work. Correspondence between the two authors, with artists, institutions, and others concerns researching and writing the volume. Also documented are the successes and failures of Constantine's decade long pursuit to publish the book. Other substantive files relate to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Getty Conservation Institute, Sheila Hicks, Jack Lenor Larsen, Rhode Island School of Design, and <emph render="italic">Soviet Film Posters</emph>. Files concerning the University of the Arts' 2003 Commencement include a videocassette.Writings by Constantine are lecture material and notes. Also found are transcripts of interviews with Constantine and writings by others. Printed material includes newspaper and magazine articles about Constantine and her career. A scrapbook of printed material and photographs documents an exhibition of Latin American posters at the Library of Congress organized by Constantine.Photographs of people include Mildred Constantine with family, friends, artists and others at public and private events around the world. Notable photographs include: Magdalena Abakanowicz, Anni Albers, Alfred Barr, Luis Barragan, Lou Block, Louise Bourgeois, Jagoda Buic, Elaine Lustig Cohen, Charles Coiner, James Marston Fitch, Mathias Goeritz, Ingeborg Ten Haeff, Ann d'Harnoncourt, Sheila Hicks, Richard Koch, Nancy Koenigsberg, Jack Lenor Larsen, Leo Lionni, Roberto Burle Marx, Ruth Reeves, Laurel Reuter, Eleanor Roosevelt, Ben Shahn, Massimo Vignelli, Ulfert Wilke, and Claire Zeisler. Schenck, Edgar Craig, 1909-1959. Edgar C. Schenck Records, 1950-1955.
Title:
Edgar C. Schenck Records, 1950-1955.
The development and expansion of the Albright Art Gallery during Edgar Schenck's tenure included the addition of the first curators to the staff, beginning with Patrick J. Kelleher's appointment in 1950. Kelleher was succeeded by Carroll Hogan in 1954. The administrative correspondence of these curators is included in this series. Other additions to the staff included the successive appointments of Peggy Elfvin and Virginia Flynn as publicity secretaries. Beatrice Howe, assistant director, continued to handle the routine correspondence of the Gallery. Gordon M. Smith, who succeeded Schenck, assumed office in September of 1955, and therefore his correspondence during the latter part of 1955 is included here also. Correspondence falls into three main categories. First, correspondence with other museum administrations documents a large number of loans of art from the Gallery's permanent collection for inclusion in exhibitions. Other correspondence with museums concerns administrative policies, including surveys of institutional practices in American museums; these records document decision-making. The third category is that of art dealers, usually offering art works for consideration for purchase, but sometimes also documenting loans to exhibitions at the Albright and at private dealer galleries. Artists' letters of note included a number from sculptor Jacques Lipchitz who lectured at the Gallery, and also sculptor David Smith. Significant letters from dealers include many from Martha Jackson, who founded her important New York gallery in the late 1940's. Board correspondence includes draft copies of meeting minutes, as well as reports of the various committees, the art director, and curator of education, Roger Squires. Annual lecture series and concert program folders yielded many letters from nationally-recognized scholars, artists, and concert musicians.

Title:
Clement Greenberg papers, 1928-1995.
The papers document Greenberg's personal and intellectual development from age nineteen until his death. Greenberg's letters to Harold Lazarus, together with the journals, tell of the critic's artistic and literary ambitions, his obsession with Partisan review colleagues, and his friendship with artists such as Pollock, Frankenthaler, and Noland. Manuscripts, seminars, and lectures, unpublished and published, reveal Greenberg's writing process and the evolution of his ideas from the 1920s until his death. Work files include clippings and writings on Jackson Pollock, David Smith, Morris Louis, and Jack Bush. The compilation of clippings spanning several decades portray the shifting public view of Greenberg, while photographs and tapes preserve a visual and audio record of him lecturing and otherwise interacting in the art world. Diaries, journals, and select correspondence sealed. The repository also has three rolls of microfilm of the unrestricted portion of the Clement Greenberg papers held at the Archives of American Art.

Howard W. and Jean Lipman papers
The Howard W. and Jean Lipman papers measure 46.6 linear feet and span the years 1916 to 2000. A copy of an 1848 brochure, retained by Jean Lipman in her research and writings files accounts for the early span date listed in the title of the collection. The bulk dates for the collection are 1932 to 1992. The records include correspondence, notes and printed material that served as research and reference material, along with some financial material that documents the art collecting activities and interests of the Lipmans. The collection also contains writing and editorial material used by Jean Lipman in her dual roles as an editor for <emph render="italic">Art in America</emph> magazine and as a respected author. The Personal Files describe the social activities and associations of the Lipmans and include biographical information, personal and family correspondence, gift giving activities, the art career of Jean Lipman, and relationships maintained by the Lipmans with various art organizations. The Howard and Jean Lipman Art Collection Files describe the art collecting activities and interests of the Lipmans throughout their lifetime. The General Files section consists of reference files on art organizations and galleries with whom the Lipmans maintained relationships. Also included are particular topics or exhibitions of interest to the Lipmans. The Sculptors and Painters of Interest section served as reference files about the activities of artists in whom the Lipmans were interested and whose works they owned, or considered owning. The Folk Art Collection section documents the collecting and purchasing activities of the Lipmans as they amassed and then subsequently sold their two significant folk art collections. The Artists Files document the friendship and projects that developed between the Lipmans and three major American artists: Alexander Calder, Louise Nevelson, and David Smith. Of special interest to researchers will be some original Calder artwork mixed into the correspondence between the Lipmans and Calder, as well as drawings, sketches, prints, and posters found in the associated oversize folder. Also found in the Calder subseries are some proofs from <emph render="italic">Calder's Circus</emph>, edited by Jean Lipman. The Research and Writing Files is divided into five sections dealing with research and writing projects undertaken by Jean Lipman. The first three sections deal with biographical projects that resulted in books or articles about three significant American primitive artists: Jurgan Frederick Huge, Rufus Porter, and Samuel Wood Gaylor. The fourth section deals with writing projects that resulted in the publication of several generalized books on the topic of American folk art. The final section consists of materials associated with the published articles and other authored works of Jean Lipman on a variety of American art topics. The <emph render="italic">Art in America</emph> Editorial Files consists of editorial material maintained by Jean Lipman during her tenure (1941-1971) as editor of <emph render="italic">Art in America</emph>. The Financial Files reflect the early financial activities of the magazine during the brief period when the Lipmans owned it.During the period that Jean Lipman served as editor, a variety of distinguished art historians, artists, architects, novelists, and poets contributed articles, columns, or artwork to the magazine. A sampling of correspondents that can be found in the general correspondence of this series include: Joseph Albers, Marcel DuChamp, John Dos Passos, Nelson Rockefeller, Charles Sheeler, and Andrew Wyeth. The General Correspondence Files also document the two subsequent changes of ownership and the growth of subscribers that occurred during the period of Lipman's editorship.Editorial material related to individual magazine issues is found within this series, as well as information pertaining to the innovative advertising and special projects undertaken by the magazine as it sought to expand its readership and prestige. The <emph render="italic">Art in America</emph> series also chronicles the changes at the magazine that led to Lipman's resignation as editor in 1971.

Title:
David Smith at work. 1960-1965.
Ca. 1,700 images are on enlarged proof sheets, each depicting a series of photographs developed as a composite sheet from 35 mm. negatives. Only a limited number of views, those with dots on the corners, have been published. Shown is sculptor David Smith at work on his farm "Terminal Iron Works" in Bolton Landing, New York. Smith is seen both at work in the interior studio and interacting with his pieces arranged outdoors in the fields, primarily during the winter months when snow covered the ground. One series shows Smith arranging iron tools shipped to him from Spoleto, Italy, which were meant for incorporating into his sculptures. Several sheets portray him in his environment, walking, shopping, reading and conversing.

Title:
Barbara Rose papers, 1940-1993 (bulk 1960-1985).
The collection, a selected portion from the total Barbara Rose archive, documents Rose's research and writings about American art, especially the New York art world during the 1960s and 1970s. It contains correspondence, manuscripts, photographs, and audio and video tapes. About .5 linear ft. of correspondence from artists includes substantial files of letters from Anne and Avigdor Arikha, and Mark Di Suvero, plus copies of letters between Ad Reinhardt and Thomas Merton (1956-64), and two 1966 letters from Robert Motherwell in which he describes the post-war New York art scene. Correspondence with other artists, critics and dealers is scattered throughout the manuscript and research files. These latter files contain Rose's research and portions of manuscripts for published and unpublished works on Patrick Henry Bruce, Georgia O'Keefe, Andy Warhol, Lee Krasner and Jackson Pollock, the Fernando Vijande gallery in Spain, E.A.T. (Experiments in Art and Technology), and the Art and Technology program of the Los Angeles County Museum. Smaller files contain notes and portions of manuscripts about Clement Greenberg, Peggy Guggenheim, Alexander Liberman, Mark Di Suvero, and the Pier 35 project in New York City. One file contains Rose's student notes from a class with Meyer Schapiro. The Vijande Gallery material includes biographical and visual material (slides and photographs) about Spanish artists, most of whom were represented by the gallery. These include José Luis Alexanco, Frederic Amat, Francesc Artigua, Rafael Baixeras, Evaristo Bellotti, Juan Bordes, Carmen Calvo, Miguel Angel Camparo, Joan Cardells, Victoria Civera, Chema Cobo, Costus, Gerardo Delgado, Xavier Franquesa, Maria Gomez, Luis Gordillo, Miquel Navarro, Soledad Sevilla, José Maria Sicilia, Juan Uslé, and Zush.

Title:
Morris Louis and Morris Louis Estate papers
The Morris Louis and Morris Louis Estate papers measure 17.8 linear feet and date from circa 1912-2007, with the bulk of the material dating from 1965-2000. The collection documents Morris Louis' career as a Color Field painter and founding participant in the Washington Color School, as well as the subsequent administration of his estate by his wife Marcella Brenner. Found within Morris Louis’ papers are biographical materials, correspondence, photographs, scattered financial records, notes, writings, printed materials, and a canvas sample. The Morris Louis Estate papers include records of gallery exhibitions, mostly André Emmerich Gallery; artwork inventories; legal records concerning the lawsuit Bernstein v. Brenner; financial records of the sale of Louis’ artwork; printed materials; writings about Louis; photographs of exhibition installations and artwork; and posthumous project files which include documentation of film projects by Robert Pierce Productions, a catalog raisonne, PBS documentaries, video recordings of the exhibition "Morris Louis Now", and numerous sound recordings of interviews with artists, many with transcripts, discussing Morris Louis and conducted by Anita Faatz. Within the Morris Louis papers (circa 3 linear feet) are scattered biographical materials for Morris Louis and Marcella Brenner. Correspondence is with family friends, artists, and galleries, the bulk of which consists of photocopies. Of note are letters from Helen Frankenthaler, Clement Greenberg, Leonard Bocour, Kenneth Noland, and Anne Truitt. Business records include lists of artwork, receipts for art supplies, and scattered tax records. Six notebooks belonging to Morris Louis contain miscellaneous notes about students, studio rental payments, addresses, travel expenses, and a short list of paintings. There is one notebook of Marcella Brenner’s containing notes about expenses and addresses. Also found are printed materials, one canvas sample, and one embossing stamp. Photographs are of Morris Louis, Marcella Brenner, and the Bernstein family. The majority of the collection (circa 15 linear feet) consists of records created and maintained by Marcella Brenner in the course of managing Louis’ estate and posthumous exhibitions and projects. There are numerous gallery exhibition records for many posthumous and retrospective exhibitions between 1965 through 2002, including those held at the Andre Emmerich Gallery, the Hirshhorn Museum, and numerous other U.S. and international galleries and museums. Louis' artwork is documented in highly detailed inventory lists and cards. Legal records document the lawsuit brought by the Bernstein family against Marcella Brenner which began in 1964 and ended in 1970 in favor of Brenner. Financial records document sales. Printed materials include clippings, exhibition catalogs and announcements, and other miscellaneous materials. Writings include essays about Louis and manuscript copies of the book <emph render="italic">Trustee for the Human Race: Litigation over the Morris Louis Paintings</emph> written by Ruth S. Blau under contract for Marcella Brenner. Photographs are primarily of artwork depicted in exhibition installations. Project files are found for several posthumous documentary film projects and a catalog raisonne, and include a series of audio recordings of interviews of 27 artists conducted by Anita Faatz in 1970-1971. Artists interviewed include Clement Greenberg, Leonard Bocour, Andre Emmerich, Helen Frankenthaler, Kenneth Noland, and many others.
