Scott, Walter, Sir, 1771-1832. Autograph letter signed : place not specified, to George Ellis, [1804 Mar. 16].
Title:
Autograph letter signed : place not specified, to George Ellis, [1804 Mar. 16].
Promising to send a "grand packet" with "Sir Tristem" and intending to send the same to Heber and Douce. Discussing the Edinburgh Review, noting that he is not regularly connected with the work, nor has he "either inclination or talents to use the critical scalping knife, unless as in the case of Godwin." Asking for a passage referring to Thomas (the Rhymer) in the French "Hornchild" and discussing his determination to prove that Thomas is the author of both "Sir Tristrem" and "Hornchild," but noting that he must first read that romance "before I can make my arrangements." Discussing the life of Thomas the Rhymer and alleging that, in addition to being an excellent poet, he gave very good dinners.

Title:
Questionnaire about the duc de La Vallière's library by Abbé Desaunays to Abbé Rive, 1757-1777.
Questionnaire (12 p.) by Abbé Desaunays addressed to the Abbé Rive, the duc de la Vallière's librarian, with the latter's replies, dated 28 May 1777. An account of the Duke's library, drawn up when Louis XV was apparently comtemplating its acquisition. Questions concern the number of volumes, the rarest books, the finest copies, their provenance and value, and whether a catalogue has been made. The Abbé Rive renders his opinions of the most important books in the library and gives a brief description of the library's formation. Bound with an ALS (6 p.) of the duc de la Vallière, dated from Versailles 5 Oct. 1757, about collecting a sum owed to him (a gambling debt?) by the King.

Title:
Autograph letter signed : Edinburgh, to George Ellis, 1804 June 18.
Sadly reporting the death of his bachelor Uncle (Captain Robert Scott); mentioning that he left "a beautiful little villa" to Scott, but that Scott intends to continue with his Reged plan and to sell the villa "to great advantage." Hoping that Ellis will be able to visit soon; giving instructions for sending Ellis's article (on "Sir Tristrem") to the Edinburgh Review; mentioning the Clerk of Tranent, "Lai le Freine" and the "Seven Wise Masters." Regretting that Ellis was not sent an "uncastrated" copy of "Sir Tristrem" and promising to rectify this; asking whether Douce, Heber, and Park have received theirs; discussing a point of medieval law; reiterating his wish to hear from Ellis soon.

Autograph letter signed : Edinburgh, to George Ellis, 1804 May 4.
Mentioning that he has been engaged in traveling back and forth to Selkirkshire on business and that he has procured a "decent farm-house " in Reged that will save him from "these teasing migrations;" inviting Ellis to visit and describing a proposed itinerary, looking forward to showing him the border; reporting that "Sir Tristrem" is published and promising to send "three uncastrated copies" for Ellis, Heber and Douce. Describing the merits of a very near relative who is obliged "by some untoward circumstances to turn his eyes towards Jamaica," and asking Ellis to recommend him to his contacts in the West Indies.

Enclosing a transcript of Gervase of Tillbury's "De Dominica Castre de Espervel" (3 p., in Latin), mentioning how this contextualizes the dating of the romance of King Richard, and further discussing other romances in that work; recalling the "paradise of Sunninghill" that he and Charlotte enjoyed while visiting; describing his further travels to Oxford with Heber; hoping to catch up on his work so that he is able to return to "Sir Tristrem" soon and mentioning that the new edition of the Minstrelsy has been published in Scotland; referring to Leyden.

Manuscripts and documents relating to Bibliotheca Phillippica, 1794-1886 (bulk, 1800-1864).
Correspondence, invoices and other items from auctioneers, booksellers and printers, including John Lowe, Obadiah Rich, Thomas Thorpe and Bernard Quaritch. Thirty catalogs of various portions of the collection, mainly in manuscript, created between 1816 and 1872. This collection includes manuscript catalogs of the libraries of Arthur Capel (Earl of Essex), Bishop Samuel Butler and Leander van Ess. Items from the auctioneers Payne and Foss concern their purchase for Phillipps of material from the Richard Heber sale of 1833 and the Benjamin Bright sale of 1844-1845. There is also miscellaneous correspondence, including letters from Brasenose College (Oxford) and the Bodleian Library about gifts from Phillipps, as well as several letters by him, including copies of letters for 1854-1855 madeby the Wedgwood Patent Manifold Writer. Materials concerning Phillipps' Continental tours include, but are not limited to, visas, his notes on Continental libraries, and letters from the librarian of Lille to the librarian of Cambrai regarding Phillipps' use of their collections. The collection also includes Phillipps' holograph manuscript of a "Visual shelf list" (an early attempt to systematize the arrangement of his collections), notes of the expenses involved in moving the collections from Middle Hill to Thirlestaine House, and lists of manuscripts in the libraries of collectors Walter Sneyd and John Lee drawn up for his Catalogus manuscriptorum in bibliothecis Angliae. Among the miscellaneous manuscripts are items relating to the purchase of the estate of Donald Fenton and a manuscript book of miscellaneous poems, including "Amor Patrie," a poem spoken at Manchester. Material about the disposition of Phillipps' collection after his death incudes a listing of his furniture, plate and pictures by James Toovy, and autograph letters from Edward Bond, Keeper of Manuscripts at the British Museum.

Acknowledging his praises of Heber and presenting and discussing at length his own work on "Sir Tristrem"; asking him to return the material when he finishes, as his eyesight is unreliable and he finds it "difficult to procure a good amanuensis"; mentioning that the sheets were transcribed by Leyden, whom Heber also employs; acknowledging his approval of "the trifles" that he gave Lewis; postponing his response to "the curious & interesting question" regarding "the introduction of French words & phrases into Scotland" until he has access to his research materials; asking him to mention his publication when he speaks on "the Knight of Lionel"; inquiring as to the difference in representation of Sir Gawaine between the British/Chaucerian and French traditions and discussing medieval romances in general; seeking his and Heber's opinions of endeavoring to translate selections from "the Runic Rhymes" and indicating that his "Border Ballads will see the light in the beginning of the year."

Title:
W. (William) Chappell English ballad index collection, 18--.
This finding aid brings together a number of manuscript transcripts of English ballad indexes that were "copied under the direction of William Chappell." Some of the volumes include notes in the hand of William Chappell, but the predominant copyist's hands are identified in a letter from Chappell to Child (1875 May 29) as that of Chappell's young daughters. A few volumes are annotated by Harvard ballad scholar Francis James Child. Most of the indexes list ballad text by first line. Collection includes transcripts for ballad indexes to the collections of: Pepys Ballads; Pepys' collection of "Penny merriments"; Ballad collections of Richard Heber, John Bagford, and Anthony à Wood; Ballad collection of Francis Douce; and Ballad collection of Richard Rawlinson. Original collections are at the Bodleian Library (Oxford University) and Magdalene College (University of Cambridge).

Copy of Thomas Roger's refutation, April 29, 1598, of Nicholas Bownd's Doctrine of the Sabbath, 1595 [manuscript], 1607?
Contains Roger's unpublished epistolary essay refuting Bownd's Doctrine of the Sabbath with detailed commentary keyed to book and page of Bownd's work. The letter is followed by an anonymous postscript (in the same hand as the copy) claiming that when Bownd read this letter he was immediately moved to repent his opinions, a claim for which there is no evidence. The only published response to Bownd's work by Rogers was Faith, doctrine and religion, 1607.
