Phelps was an officer in the US military. His career began as a cadet at West Point in the 1830s. He retired as a brigadier general in 1862.
John Wolcott Phelps (1813-1885), Brigadier General in the U.S. Army was a native of Vermont. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, served in the Mexican War, was made captain in 1850, and resigned in 1859. After the outbreak of the Civil War, Phelps returned to the military as Colonel of the First Regiment of Vermont Volunteers. In 1861 he was made Brigadier General of Volunteers. He assisted Farragut in the campaign to capture New Orleans and organized the first body of African-American troops in the U.S. Army. When General Benjamin Butler assigned these troops to a work detail rather than military duties, Phelps tendered his resignation. Phelps retired to his home in Vermont where he wrote several books and numerous articles on public affairs. In 1880 Phelps ran for president on the anti-Masonic American Party ticket. He received 700 votes.
Phelps was a career officer in the United States Army. He was a cadet at West point in the 1830s and retired as a brigadier general in 1862.
John W. Phelps, (1813-1885), Brigadier General of the 12th Connecticut Volunteers.
John Wolcott Phelps (1813-1885) was born in Guilford, Vermont, to John and Lucy Lovell Phelps on November 3, 1813. He was appointed to West Point on July 1, 1832, graduating in 1836. His military career prior to the Civil War included service in the Creek and Seminole Wars, the Mexican War, and the Mormon Expedition or Utah War of 1857-1858. In 1859, Phelps resigned from the U. S. Army and settled in Brattleboro, Vermont.
At the beginning of the Civil War, Phelps was appointed Colonel of the 1st Vermont Infantry. On May 27 1861, he was promoted to brigadier general. He served under Major General Benjamin F. Butler in the Gulf of Mexico, where his regiment took military possession of Ship Island, Mississippi. His troops also provided support to Commodore David Farragut's fleet in April 1862. and fought in the Battle of Forts Jackson and St. Philip. General Phelps was then stationed at Camp Parapet in Carrollton, just outside of New Orleans. While there, General Phelps organized fugitive slaves arriving at the camp into companies before formally requesting arms for these men from his commanding officer, General Butler. However, Butler told Phelps to put them to work as laborers cutting down trees around the camp instead. General Phelps refused and offered his resignation to first General Butler and later Abraham Lincoln in August 1862.
Phelps returned to Brattleboro following his military service. In 1883, he married Anna Bardwell Davis and the couple returned to his hometown of Guilford, Vermont. Phelps served as president of the Vermont Teacher's Association between 1865 and 1885 and wrote several books, eventually gaining a reputation as a scholar. In 1880, Phelps was the presidential candidate of the American Party (or Anti-Masonic Party). His ticket received only 1,045 votes nationwide. His campaign platform included ideas such as prohibition of alcohol and secret lodges, as well as justice for Native Americans, use of the Bible as a required school text, and the end of the electoral college.
John Wolcott Phelps (1813-1885), American soldier, served in the Mexican War, was made captain in 1850, and resigned in 1859, but returned to the Civil War with a troop of volunteers he raised in Vermont.
He assisted Farragut in the campaign to capture New Orleans and organized the first body of African-American troops in the U.S. Army. After the federal government ordered the troops disbanded, Phelps resigned from the army.

Title:
John W. Phelps papers, 1835-1884.
This collection consists of 180 items, primarily letters written to John W. Phelps, from 1835 to 1884. Many of these letters relate to Phelps' military career, beginning from his time as a cadet at West Point and culminating with his resignation from the U.S. Army in 1862. Several documents specifically mention events and conditions in the Seminole War and the Mexican War, including some correspondence from 1848 that alludes to failed attempts by Phelps to publish his journal kept during the Mexican War. A number of letters and reports from the early 1850s also include information about conditions in Texas and on the Mexican border. However, there are fewer documents related to Phelps' 1857-1858 Mormon Expedition service. Letters from 1861 to September 1862 relate directly to events taking place during John W. Phelps' Civil War service. Much of the later correspondence is focused on either politics or Phelps' literary and scholarly endeavors. None of the letters appear to allude to Phelps' 1880 presidential candidancy. The seller's inventory, prepared in 1925, describing the 180 documents in this collection, is available in folder 0.

Title:
John W. Phelps papers, 1862-1870.
The collection consists of papers of John W. Phelps from 1862-1870. Correspondence (1862-1863) while Phelps was camped at Camp Parapet, Louisiana following the fall of New Orleans explain the plight of a large number of blacks, many of them freedmen, coming into camp seeking food and shelter or protection from vengeful whites. Letters to Phelps from fellow officers emphasize their confidence in black soldiers and support Phelps in his efforts to organize and train black regiments for the Union forces. Contains letters (1863-1864) between Phelps and Thomas Webster, member of the Supervisory Committee for Recruiting Colored Regiments (Philadelphia), detailing the Committee's efforts including fund raising for schools for black children in Louisiana, and the establishment of a training school for officers to command the black regiments. Several letters from the late 1860's and 1870's indicate that Phelps carried his concern and activities on behalf of the black man into the Reconstruction era.

Charles Eliot Norton papers
Title:
Charles Eliot Norton papers
This archive contains letters addressed to Charles Eliot Norton from about 1845 to1908. Norton was a Harvard graduate (A.B. 1846) and professor of the History of Fine Arts at Harvard from 1874 to 1898, with a special interest in the study and translation of Dante. Many of the letters in this collection deal with art and with Dante. In addition he knew a great many prominent figures in both England and the United States, especially those in the political field and the literary and artistics fields. His correspondence with these people often touches upon their public and their private lives. From 1863 to 1868 Norton was joint editor with his friend James Russell Lowell of the North American review. The letters addressed to him as editor are marked in this index by a star (*) and the folders containing them are stamped with a red N.A.R.(=North American Review). In 1898 Norton's opposition to the Spanish-American war led Senator George F. Hoar to criticize him. A list of some of the letters Norton received commenting on this controversy is at the end of this index. Referenced throughout the finding aid is the Excavations at Delphi (scrapbook folder) with a folder designation, such as f.1, f.2, and so on. All folders can be found at item number 5308.

Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915
Title:
Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915
Papers of the Palfrey family of New England. The material of this collection encompasses over 150 years of American history and many items of interest besides those documenting the life and works of John Gorham Palfrey, who is its central figure. A few of these may be briefly mentioned here. The papers of William Palfrey include letters between John Wilkes and the Sons of Liberty and William Palfrey's personal correspondence with Wilkes at the time of the latter's imprisonment in 1769-1770, including Palfrey's description of the Boston Massacre. William Palfrey's business account and financial papers are extensive and range in subject from accounts of trade with Virginia in 1763 to the disposition of funds of the Continental Army during the time Palfrey was Pay Master General. His close association and correspondence with John Hancock should be noted. Several interesting items pertain to the dispute between Hancock and the Boston printer, John Mein, which resulted in Thomas Longman's suit against Mein and the latter's imprisonment. The papers of John Palfrey deal mainly with his business affairs and the management of his plantation at Attakapas. However, several letters by his sons, Edward, William Taylor, and Henry William give first-hand accounts of battles in the war of 1812. Letters to John Gorham Palfrey from over 1000 corespondents form the largest single section in the collection. Of special importance are 377 letters from Jared Sparks and 148 letters from Charles Sumner.
