The collection consists of materials collected by Henry P. Slaughter which emphasize the early history of African Americans in the United States. The collection is composed mainly of slave papers and correspondence of African American leaders, abolitionists, and political figures of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Includes correspondence of abolitionists Frederick Douglass Sr., Frederick Douglass Jr., William Lloyd Garrison, Wendell Phillips, and Gerritt Smith; records relating to slavery in the United States; correspondence pertaining to the Haitian Revolution (1791-1804); and the papers of John W. Phelps, Brigadier General of the 12th Connecticut Infantry Regiment, who was a strong advocate for the use of African American troops in the Civil War.
