Peale-Sellers family collection, 1686-1963
Title:
Peale-Sellers Family Collection, 1686-1963
The collection, divided into seven series, represents the careers and interests of the members of the Peale-Sellers family from the 1670s to 1960s. More than half is correspondence among various members of the families. The Peale family is best known as a family of artists; however, family interests and activities were much more wide-ranging. The best known Peale is Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827, APS 1786), who produced more than one thousand paintings, including hundreds of portraits of leading Americans during the colonial and early national periods. Peale was married three times, to Rachel Brewster (1744-1790), Elizabeth de Peyster (1765-1804), and Hannah More (1755-1821). He had eighteen children, eleven of whom reached adulthood. Three of Charles Willson Peale’s sons became artists: Raphaelle Peale (1774-1825), Rembrandt Peale (1778-1860), and Rubens Peale (1784-1865). A fourth son, Titian Ramsay Peale (1799-1885, APS 1833), was a naturalist (who made drawings on the exploring expeditions he accompanied) and pioneer in photography, and another son, Benjamin Franklin Peale (1795-1870), became a naturalist and paleontologist. Peale’s daughter Sophonisba Angusciola was married to Coleman Sellers (1781-1834), an inventor and manufacturer of machinery, including locomotives. Two of their sons, George Escol Sellers (1808-1899) and Coleman Sellers (1827-1907, APS 1872), were inventors and engineers. The latter served as director of the construction of the hydro-electric power development at Niagara Falls. He was married to Cornelia Wells Sellers (1831-1909). One of their grandsons was Charles Coleman Sellers (1903-1980, APS 1979), a librarian and historian and the author of several studies of the Peale family, including a Charles Willson Peale biography.

Harrison, Benjamin, 1833-1901. Pacific Coast tour photographs and ephemera, 1891-1987
President Harrison's speech-making tour in 1891 was, at that time, the longest journey ever undertaken by any President while in office. The 9,232 mile rail trip lasted one month and three days. The trip was partly planned and largely financed by the former Governor of California, Leland Stanford. The pioneer railroad builder had invited the President to his ranch in Palo Alto to discuss a professorship at the newly built Stanford University and to participate in the dedication of that institution. Included in the Presidential party were First Lady Caroline Harrison, her secretary and niece Mrs. Dimmick, Russell B. Harrison and his wife, Mary McKee (the Harrison's daughter), Carter B. Harrsion and his wife, Postmaster General John Wanamaker, Secretary of Agriculture Jeremiah McClain Rusk, and Marshall Dan Ransdell.

Stuart, Edwin Sydney, 1853-1920. Papers, 1886-1905.
Title:
Papers, 1886-1905.
The bulk of the collection is correspondence, 1886-1905. Some of this material is concerned with Stuart's business, Leary's Bookstore; the majority, however, covers his political activities as a member of Republican organizations, as a Select Councilman, and as Mayor of Philadelphia. Some of the issues are: Stalwart Republicanism, powers of favorable press, city improvements--especially concerning street pavements, and political loyalty over business qualifications. John Wanamaker, Matthew Quay, and Simon Cameron are among Stuart's influential constituents. Business and political papers make up a small part of the collection. Invoices, receipts, and insurance information of Leary, Stuart and Co. may be found among the business papers. More significant are the political papers which include endorsements for the Mayoralty in support of Stuart. One endorsement comes from " a group of colored voters from West Philadelphia calling themselves the Edwin S. Stuart Club." Invitations and announcements for various social functions complete the collection.

Sims, Irene Sickel, 1887-1980. Irene Sickel Sims diary, 1916-1967, bulk 1916-1917.
Title:
Irene Sickel Sims diary, 1916-1967, bulk 1916-1917.
Collection comprises Sims handwritten diary (about 280 pages). She her first entry is on 13 July 1916, but on 19 July she copied in entries she had made for 27-30 June. She then made regular entries until 29 June 1917, with a the final entry dated 18 November 1917, when Sims explained that the hiatus resulted from her breaking an arm during a horseback ride in June. Sims wrote in detail about her work relationships and duties, including business lunches and dinners, salary negotiations, interactions colleagues and superiors, attendance at conferences, as well as her meetings with John Wanamaker and Condé Nast She was delighted when business associates were willing to treat her as they would a man and when she had evidence of their respect. In fact, she was courted by other companies and outlined their negotiations. She also stressed the importance of reading and high culture to her work and private life, and provided numerous quotes along with reports on her reading habits, as well as her attendance at public performances of all kinds, and included extensive notes on lectures made by John Cowper Powys and Sir Ernest Shackleton. In regard to her private life, she expressed concern about the customs of the men she dated and that they might consider her "old fashioned." Later she came to revel in her conservatism. Includes three clippings laid in. There is a note written in 1967 regarding the discovery of a key to unlock the volume. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Charles M. Kurtz papers
Title:
Charles M. Kurtz papers
The Charles M. Kurtz papers measure 27.74 linear feet and date from 1843 to 1990 with the bulk of the material dating from 1884 to 1909. The bulk of the collection consists of chronological correspondence between Kurtz and his family, most notably his wife, friends, colleagues, and business associates. Kurtz's letters are amazingly detailed and document many notable exhibitions, galleries, museums, private collections, as well as cities, people, and events of the period. The letters between Kurtz and his wife are most interesting for their descriptive commentary on late 19th century life and offer a complete picture of Kurtz's activities. Many of Kurtz's letters to Halsey C. Ives can be found in the Halsey C. Ives Papers. Some of the letters in the collection are illustrated. Also found in the collection are Kurtz's diaries, scrapbooks, printed materials, and photographs.

Bookmark collection, ca.1890-ca.1930.
Title:
Bookmark collection, ca.1890-ca.1930.
Thirty-eight bookmarks and ribbons with a Chester County, Pennsylvania, connection, dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Most of bookmarks are home-made, the maker(s) starting with silk ribbons and adding embroidered perforated paper, scraps, or greeting cards to the ribbons. The names I. Ellwood Larkin, Anna C.N.(?) Larkin, and Uncle William appear on three of the bookmarks, and a fourth was made for "dear uncle." Three are embroidered with the motto "Forget me not." Several have religious designs or mottoes, such as "God is Love." A textile label was used to decorate one bookmark. Four bookmarks are fabric but not ribbon: two counted cross-stitch, one needlepoint, and the fourth appears to be woven. These are newer than the rest of the collection. One bookmark is made of vellum and has pansies painted on it. Two of the bookmarks are advertisements, one for Pear's Soap, and the other a souvenir of the 1905 Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition held in Portland, Oregon, compliments of Pacific Coast Condensed Milk Co. of Seattle. A religious New Year's text for 1895 was printed for the Bethany Bible Union by John Wanamaker; it bears no advertisement for his store, however. Two ribbons are printed with poems, "His Star" by Annie E. Michener, dated 1907, and "Alone." Three ribbons were probably not meant to be used as bookmarks, although they could have been used as such. The first is imprinted with "Good Will Fire Co'y Fair, Aid, 1892," the second is imprinted with "Flower Stand Fair, W.C.C.B., Jan. 22 to 24, 1891." The third ribbon is decorated with an eagle atop an American flag and a seal labeled "Landing of Columbus," and is imprinted with "National Public School Celebration, Columbus Day, Oct. 21st, 1492, 1892, official badge, patent applied for." The last item in the collection is a swatch of hand-painted silk used as a birthday card. Painted on the silk is a little boy in a page's outfit, five butterflies, and the greeting "A greeting by my page I send/ To thee on our birthday my Bessie." The card is not signed.
