Literary productions include articles, speeches, and drafts of books, notably Our Catholic heritage in Texas (commissioned by the Knights of Columbus) and Morfi's history of Texas. Research materials include notes, lists of archival holdings, transcriptions, translations, and photostats of early Spanish, Mexican, and Texas documents. Personal and biographical materials include resumés, press releases, and financial records. Literary productions by others include both manuscripts and printed materials. Audiovisual materials include 8mm movies, photographs, phonodiscs, maps, and book illustrations. Materials from his time in Del Rio, his service with FEPC, his teaching and departmental activities, and his library and acquisitions work reflect his activities. Major correspondents include Eugene Barker, E.J. Burrus, J.T. Canales, Fred Chabot, Donald Coney, Eleuterio Escobar, Paul J. Foik, Chas. Hackett, E.E. Mireles, Alonso Perales, George I. Sánchez, and E.W. Winkler, among others. Among the ephemera is a collection of printers' marks dating from the early 16th century.

This is a typescript of Harlan's letters, spanning 1844-53, to Julia Le Grand (addressed as Nell) describing his experience in the Mexican War, his 1849 overland trip to California, and his life as a miner in California. Most of Harlan's letters focus on his feelings for Julia. A few letters are addressed to members of Julia's or Harlan's family. The typescript is accompanied by several letters from 1942 to 1943 discussing Harlan and the possible publication of the letters.
