This is a typescript of Harlan's letters, spanning 1844-53, to Julia Le Grand (addressed as Nell) describing his experience in the Mexican War, his 1849 overland trip to California, and his life as a miner in California. Most of Harlan's letters focus on his feelings for Julia. A few letters are addressed to members of Julia's or Harlan's family. The typescript is accompanied by several letters from 1942 to 1943 discussing Harlan and the possible publication of the letters.

Charles T. Harlan spent his early life in Berks County, Pennsylvania. In 1844 he worked in a store in Vicksburg, Mississippi where he hoped to marry Julia Ellen (Nell) Le Grand. Harlan volunteered for service in the Mexican War and returned to Vicksburg in 1848. When news of the gold discoveries reached him he decided to seek his fortune in California.
