The Texas State Historical Association (TSHA) was organized in 1897 with the general objectives of promoting historical studies, particularly the discovery, collection, preservation and publication of historical material pertaining to Texas. TSHA publishes the "Southwestern Historical Quarterly," the "Handbook of Texas," and the "Junior Historian," and holds educational programs dedicated to the field of Texas history. The TSHA's permanent quarters are in the Center for American History, on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin.

Founded in 1897 to preserve the history of Texas and the American Southwest, the Texas State Historical Association publishes the "Southwestern Historical Quarterly" in Austin, Texas. Conducts annual meeting, usually during first week of March.

The Texas State Historical Association held its first meeting on Texas Independence Day in 1897. A constitution was adopted, giving the general objectives of the Association as the promotion of historical studies, particularly the discovery, collection, preservation and publication of historical material pertaining to Texas.

In July 1897 the Texas State Historical Association issued its first publication, the Quarterly (later Southwestern Historical Quarterly ). Other publications of the Texas State Historical Association include the Handbook of Texas, the Junior Historian and many books.

The Association has also been dedicated to furthering education in the field of Texas history. Programs offered include the Junior Historians of Texas program, for students, and the Institute of Texas Studies seminar, for teachers.

In 1950 the Association moved its offices to quarters in the Eugene C. Barker Texas History Center, now the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History, on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin .
