Letter copybook (1838 July 8-1839 Apr. 17) of General Worth while stationed at Buffalo, Madison Barracks (with the 8th Infantry), Albany, and Plattsburg, N.Y., the later two posts with the Department of the North. The letters are to various officials and military officers including Roger Jones, Joel R. Poinsett, and Winfield Scott, and relate to military actions along the New York-Canadian border, including some events in the aftermath of the Caroline Affair. Also, a 2 p. extract of a report of 1842 Apr. 25 has been laid in.

These records include a letterbook, 1811, kept in Lisbon, Portugal, concerning the ship "Mohawk"; correspondence, 1800-1835, including letters of William Branch Giles and Abel Parker Upshur and items containing comments on national politics; an account book, 1823-1831, concerning shipbuilding and ship cargoes; accounts; materials concerning an 1804 voyage of the merchant ship, "Thomas Wilson"; and miscellany. Also, includes correspondence, 1836-1877, and military records of Christopher Quarles Tompkins (1813-1877) of Richmond, Va., and while serving with the 3rd Artillery Regiment of the U.S. Army and the 22nd Virginia Infantry Regiment of the Confederate States Army of the Kanawha, including letters of Braxton Bragg, George Washington Cullum, Roger Jones, and Sally Louisa Tompkins.

Title: Diaries and Letters of Electus Backus, ca.1809-1860.

The 31-page diary by Electus Backus covers his time traveling from San Antonio to El Paso, Texas in 1850 and 1851. In the diary he talks about Bishop John Lamy, Lorenzo Sitgreaves, Dr. S. W. Woodhouse, members of the Sitgreaves Expedition, as well as the bad weather and the landscape and inhabitants of Texas. He also discusses his journey from El Paso to Albuquerque. There is one diary page by Backus in June 1848 while he was taking part in the Mexican War in Puebla, Mexico, the site where Santa Ana executed Mexía; he mentions meeting General Stephen Kearny. There is also one page of a diary by Backus from 1860 while he was living in El Paso. There are also several letters and statements regarding Backus' protest against and disagreement with a letter by the Secretary of War, Charles Conrad, stating that he was commissioned to Major of the 3rd U.S. Infantry on October 10, 1850; Backus believed it was June 10 instead. This material includes letters by Backus to Adjutant General Roger Jones and Senator Jefferson Davis, who was on the Committee of Military Affairs, along with a statement of facts by Backus. There is also a copy of a letter by Backus to Colonel Samuel Cooper in August 1860 about his commission date. Also included is a 5-page manuscript by Hugh Brady about his brother, Samuel Brady, Indian fighter of western Pennsylvania (the draft is in Backus' handwriting - Hugh Brady was Backus' father-in-law). There is also one letter by Electus Backus, Sr., to his brother Andrew in New York. This letter was written while he was with the US Army in New Orleans in 1809.

Call, regarding plans to use militia and regular army troops to drive the Seminoles from middle Florida in response to recent deadly raids near the territorial capital. The other (Sept. 13, 1842), addressed to the adjutant-general of the army, Roger Jones, concerns the purchase from the Kickapoos of white child captives of the Comanches.

Includes seven diaries and record books (most in Spanish) kept by Juan Murrieta between 1858 and 1934, and which include references to his bank accounts at California Bank, First National Bank, and Security Trust and Savings Bank, as well as listings of accounts kept for his children Henry (1931), Lita (1931), and A.J. (1922-1926). Other personal items belonging to Murrieta include his 1868 United States citizenship certificate, his 1868 renouncement of allegiance to the Queen of Spain, and his 1926 United States passport, as well as a 1983 letter from Sherman Block to Mrs. William R.
