Chiefly correspondence of Return Jonathan Meigs (1740-1823) relating principally to his activities as Indian agent to the Cherokees (1801-1823), with a few letters (1772-1774) concerning his Revolutionary War service. Includes a letter (1804 Dec. 10) from Meigs to Andrew Pickens relating to Cherokee lands. Papers of Meigs's son, Return Jonathan Meigs (1764-1825), relate to his tenure as governor of Ohio (1810-1814) and include a letterbook (1820-1821) while he served as U.S. Postmaster General. Papers of Return Jonathan Meigs (1801-1891), lawyer and attorney general of Tennessee, concern the removal of Indians from Alabama and the Mississippi Territory from 1831 to 1834.

Included are his 24 Jan. 1818 letter to Dillon Murphy regarding Peter Williams's contract to carry the mail on Ohio post route 152; and his 17 July 1820 letter to Henry Clay discussing the disagreements he was having with Clay's friend Captain John Fowler. Also included is a newspaper clipping telling the story of how Meigs came to be named "Return Jonathan."

Letterbook providing detailed view of postal schedules, regulations, as well as local problems and political unrest during the War of 1812. Topics discussed include difficulty of enforcing postal regulations, challenges of roads and transportation of the day on delivery of mail, and undependable postmasters and contractors, including letter, 19 June 1812, in which Bacot chides a subcontractor for hiring James Warren Oliver, "the Stage driver who was convicted last year of robbing our northern mails in 1810..."; report, 5 Oct. 1811, of a tornado; and an illness of a postal contractor, reported 6 Sept. 1813, following a hurricane. Impact of the War of 1812 and the embargo and blockade of Charleston harbor also appear in this volume, including letters, 5 and 11 Oct. 1813, re Bacot's disapproval of published accounts of arrival in Charleson harbor of the U.S. sloop-of-war Argus with the captured British ship Barbadoes. Correspondents include Postmasters General Gideon Granger and R. J.
