Romani, Felice, 1788-1865. Autograph letter signed, dated : Turin, 23 November 1841, to [Gaetano] Donizetti, 1841 Nov. 23.
Title:
Autograph letter signed, dated : Turin, 23 November 1841, to [Gaetano] Donizetti, 1841 Nov. 23.
Saying that he will write the play for Lumley in London as promised if Donizetti will clothe it with the beauty of his music, that he must first know who is in the English company, that the musical authorities ("Maestri di musica") must be persuaded to allow as much time for the libretto to be well written as for the music Romani means the good librettists and not the scribblers on paper who, to Italy's misfortune, are flourishing like weeds, etc.

The vocal score, published in Paris by Marquerie Frères (1839), is in Italian and bears the signature of E. Seguin. The orchestra parts are holograph. The harp part is incomplete. The promptbooks are in English and contain numerous stage directions and diagrams for stage layouts. Copy one bears the stamp and signature of Edward Seguin. The cover and preliminary pages carry a playbill cut out and pasted in from the Chesnut St. Theatre and lists actors and musicians involved in the production. The title page, handwritten, reads "produced for the first time in the English language, Philadelphia, April 15th, 1844." Copy two is marked "property of Mrs. Seguin" and contains stage directions and set diagrams. It is made up of the printed libretto pasted in between the handwritten text. The dialogue parts are in English.

Bellini, Vincenzo, 1801-1835. La sonnambula [collection] : opera in two acts / libretto by Felice Romani ; music by Vincenzo Bellini.
Title:
La sonnambula [collection] : opera in two acts / libretto by Felice Romani ; music by Vincenzo Bellini. 1830-1901.
Arranged in four groups: I. Vocal scores (21). II. Orchestra parts (26). III. Chorus parts (54). IV. Promptbooks (4). A multilingual collection of production materials for Bellini's "La sonnambula," first produced in Milan in 1831. The published vocal scores include Italian editions by Ricordi (Milano, 187- ) and Launer (Paris, 184- ); Italian/English editions by Schirmer (New York, 1901), Boosey (London & New York, 187- ) and Novello (London, 187- ); Italian/German editions by Cranz (Hamburg, 1830-50) and Peters (Leipzig, 187- ); and a French edition by Girod (Paris, 185- ). The orchestra parts include a complete set published by Ricordi (pl. nos. 49266-I--49266-XII and 38952--55) which contain manuscript insertions, and two manuscript string parts in Tams folders. The holograph chorus parts include versions in Italian, Italian & German, and English & French. Several copies have uncut pages. The three English promptbooks are each based on a different edition of the published libretto (one by Rullman, NY, from the Grand English Opera Co. production with Emma Aboott, the other two lacking imprint information), all of which are heavily annotated, including cuts, insertions, and stage directions. One of these also lists the casts for productions at Drury Lane (London, 1835), Arch Street (Philadelphia, 1836), Park Street (New York, 1838), and Chesnut Street (Philadelphia, 1838); in addition, the newspaper obituary of Edw. Seguin, with J.W. Herbert's editorial of Feb. 5, 1851, is bound in. All of the English promptbooks bear the signature(s) of Edw. and/or Anne Seguin. The remaining promptbook is handwritten in German.
