Born in Gloucester, Mass., and educated at Harvard, Sargent served as an artillery officer during the Revolution. He was appointed surveyor of public lands in the Ohio country in 1786 and a year later was named secretary of the newly-created Northwest Territory. Sargent served until 1798, acting as territorial governor during much of his tenure.

Sargent was Surveyor, Secretary, and Acting Governor of the Mississippi Territory.
Born in Gloucester, Massachusetts in 1753; capt. of artillery in Revolution; member of the Ohio Co.; appointed by Congress surveyor of Northwest Territory. From 1798-1801 he was governor. He served in the northwestern wars of 1791-1794, and was wounded in St. Clair's campaign. He died in New Orleans, June 3, 1820.
