Son of Return Jonathan Meigs, 1780-1823 and Joanna Winborn, he was born Nov. 17, 1764 in Middletown, Conn., graduated from Yale and was admitted to the Conn. bar. He moved to Marietta, 0. and was appointed one of the judges. of the territorial government in 1798. He was appointed judge in Michigan Territory in 1806 but resigned to become a candidate for Governor of Ohio, but was declared ineligible. He was elected to the U.S. Senate, again ran for governor in 1810 and won. In 1814 he resigned as governor to become Postmaster-General. In 1823 he resigned because of ill health and died in Marietta, 0. on Mar. 29, 1821. (D.A.B.) (blue index cards)
