William Michael Rossetti was the brother of poet Christina Rossetti and artist Dante Rossetti. Despite early success as a poet, his skills were largely organizational; he took a job with the Excise Office, and, as a founding member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, he served as secretary and editor of The Germ. He continued to write, and to circulate among London's creative men of letters. He was popular and respected, and close with his siblings; it was his encouragement that first prompted Christina to submit poems for publications.
