Letters and miscellany of Charles Dickens [manuscript], 1840-1869.

Dickens invites artist George Cattermole to a celebration for the publication of the first volume of "Master Humphrey's clock" (The old curiosity shop); discusses a misunderstanding in a club or society with W. H. Harrison, referring briefly to Henry Ellis and Walter Savage Landor; discusses a financial matter and the renting and sale of his house with Mr. Milton; and regrets having missed James Sheridan Muspratt whom he may see the next day pending arrangements with Charles Eliot Norton. In letters tipped into books Dickens writes to F. Cooper to change dates of a reading at Oxford; agrees to a reading from either Nicholas Nickleby or Pickwick Papers; inscribes a book; and returns notes and a "clever sketch" to Edward J. Wood. There is also a letter frm George Cruikshank to John Leighton, 1876 September 24 recommending the bearer and a note by Leighton regarding the plates in "Sketches by Boz." The collection also contains a hat brush; an ivory watch stand; a wooden match-case with an applied view of the New Landing Place, Margate; a mother of pearl inlaid writing desk with a quill pen and an affidavit from Henry Child; a glass liquor flask with a metal top with a laid in note to Georgina Hogarth giving household instructions, 1861 January 1; and a hand-glass from his dressing-table in a leather case. All of these have certificates of authenticity from Miss Hogarth.
