Ryder was born on March 11, 1892 in Boston. He earned an A.B. (1915) from Acadia University, a B.D. from Colgate Divinity School; an A.M. from the Univ. of British Columbia; a Ph. D. from the Univ. of Chicago (1928); and a LL. B. from LaSalle Univ. Ryder was admitted to the Bar in Mich. In 1915 he was ordained a Baptist minister. In 1931 the city of Mount Pleasant (Mich.) signed a gas franchise contract with the Gas Corp. of Michigan, which was eventually succeeded by the MCGC. In 1948, MCGC raised rates for gas. L.F. Seymour of Farwell (Mich.) won the bid to construct a gravel road, located mostly in Ionia County and a bit of Kent County (Mich.). Seymour and Frank F. Rogers, the then State Highway Commissioner, signed the contract on Oct. 1, 1920. Seymour later sued for $10,663.21, his unpaid balance. He was eventually paid.
