Ryder was born on March 11, 1892 in Boston. He earned an A.B. (1915) from Acadia University, a B.D. from Colgate Divinity School; an A.M. from the Univ. of British Columbia; a Ph. D. from the Univ. of Chicago (1928); and a LL. B. from LaSalle Univ. Ryder was admitted to the Bar in Mich. In 1915 he was ordained a Baptist minister. He served as minister at Havelock Baptist Church in Oshkosh (Wis.), 1915-1916. From 1927 to 1934, Ryder taught and worked as head of the Sociology Dept. at Macalester College, St. Paul (Minn.). He then moved to Flint and earned a certificate in social welfare work from the Univ. of Mich. In Sept. 1942 Ryder began to teach in the Dept. of History and Social Science at CMU. By 1955 he was a professor of economics there. Ryder taught at CMU until he died in May 1956. He married Alice Mae (surname unknown)(1892-1973), with whom he had a son, John Ryder, who earned a music degree from CMU (1947). (Information from the collection.)
