Typed copy of a January 1, 1886, letter sent by D.W.H. Howard of the Maumee Valley Monumental Association to Alfred Peck Edgerton, then president of the U.S. Civil Service Commission, forwarding a cane made from the "Indian Council Elm" which stood until 1873 on the banks of the Maumee River at Grand Rapids. The typed copy was probably made around 1920 in Chicago by George Manierre for Edward E. Ayer.

Edward Everett Ayer (Nov. 16, 1841 -- May 3, 1927), businessman, bibiliophile and collector. In 1860 he joined an overland expedition to California. He stopped in Nevada, where he worked at a quarz mill in Silver City, but soon moved on to San Francisco. He remained there, working at a planing mill, until the outbread of the Civil War.
