Early settler of the Maumee River Valley in Ohio.

Born in 1817 in New York, D.W.H. Howard emigrated in 1821 to Ohio with his family. There he learned Indian languages and spent his early years as a fur trader and hunter. He was employed in 1840 by the Ewings to trade up the Missouri, but returned to Ohio in 1841 to care for his family, farm, and serve in various state and local offices.
