The papers of John Lewis document Lewis' career at Oberlin College as a teacher and scholar in the discipline of political science. His professional correspondence, which includes numerous letters of recommendation, reflects his personal and professional associations with leading members of the field. Lewis' three major books are present here in manuscript draft, together with drafts of articles, book reviews, talks, and miscellaneous teaching materials for courses taught at Oberlin and other institutions. Papers of a personal nature include letters received (1932-50) from his first wife, Ewart Kellogg Lewis.

John Donald Lewis was born in Paterson, New Jersey in 1905. He earned the A.B. from Oberlin College in 1928 and the M.A. and Ph. D. degrees from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1929 and 1934, respectively. He taught political science at Oberlin College from 1935 to 1972, serving as Chairman of the department from 1948 to 1950 and from 1953 to 1970.
