George A. Lanyi was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1913. In 1937 he earned a B. Sc. in economics from the London School of Economics and Political Science. He received the M.A. (1941) and Ph. D. (1949) from Harvard University. A specialist in international relations and comparative governmental systems, Lanyi served as a regional expert on Hungary and Yugoslavia in the Office of War Information (OWI) in Washington, D.C. from 1943 to 1945. After several brief teaching stints, Lanyi joined the faculty at Oberlin College (Oberlin, Ohio) in 1950 as an assistant professor of political science. He was made a full professor in 1958. Lanyi served as chairman of the department in 1970-71 and 1974-76. He retired in 1980, and after a brief illness died in 1981.
