John Donald Lewis was born in Paterson, New Jersey in 1905. He earned the A.B. from Oberlin College in 1928 and the M.A. and Ph. D. degrees from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1929 and 1934, respectively. He taught political science at Oberlin College from 1935 to 1972, serving as Chairman of the department from 1948 to 1950 and from 1953 to 1970. He held Fulbright, Guggenheim, and Social Science Research Council fellowships and published three major books and numerous articles. Lewis retired from teaching in 1972 and died in 1988.
