A native of Switzerland, who came to America in 1828, and finished his studies for the priesthood in Bardstown, Ky. After a few years in Cincinnati, in 1833 he came to Detroit where he remained 9 years. During the cholera epidemic of 1834 he established a hospital, and later did much for poor relief. Frederic Baraga was born on June 29, 1797 in a Slovene province of Dobrinic, Carniola, later known as Slovenia. After receiving his preparatory education in Ljubljana, where his talent for languages was marked, he studied law at the University of Vienna. Upon graduation in 1821 he broke his engagement to marry, renounced his inheritance, and entered Ljubljana's seminary. He was ordained September 21, 1823.
