No information is available on Livingstone, except as noted above. Franchere was born in Montreal in 1786. He was well educated in French and English. From 1810 through 1814 he was part of the near fatal American Fur Company expedition to the Columbia River and Astoria (Ore.), about which he later published two books. Later, Franchere continued working for the Co. in Sault Sainte Marie (Mich.), using his funds to pay the failing company's liabilities. He then associated with another fur operation and eventually operated his own fur business in New York. Franchere died on April 12, 1863 in St. Paul (Minn.) and was survived by his second wife, several daughters, a son, and a step-son. The Clarke Historical Library has various editions of his two books. Additional correspondence of Franchere's may be found in his Collection, 1835-1847, and in the American Fur Co. records, Micro. Mss.F-59, both of which are available at the Clarke. For information on the American Fur Company or the other men named in this collection, see an encyclopedia.

He remained there five years, learning the languages of the Winnebago, Wyandot, and other tribes, as well as the fur trade and merchandising business. Before settling permanently in Chicago in 1834, Kinzie served as private secretary to Lewis Cass (1826) and as an Indian agent (1828-1833). In Chicago, Kinzie held various federal posts including registrar of public lands (appt. 1841), receiver of public money (appt. 1849) and Union army paymaster (appt. 1861).
