Fondo Borghese, 1376(copy)-1827 (bulk 1580-1750).

This large collection (once a part of the Secretariat of State correspondence between 1592 and 1621) was acquired from the Borghese family for the Vatican Archives by Leo XIII in 1891. According to Charles Burns (1991), Leo XIII purchased the Fondo Borghese (e.g., the diplomatic materials relating to Clement VII and Paul V, which had been gathered by the Prussian Historical Institute). See also ASV Indici 193, "Inventario dell'Archivio Borghese donato all'archivio Vaticano dall'Istituto Storico Prussiano." This collection has proved a rich source for the political and religious history of Europe during the critical pontificates of Clement VIII, Leo XI, and Paul V (himself a Borghese). Most volumes contain internal indexes. It is important to note associated records: Vat. Greco. 2594-2600 in the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana. These were formerly identified in the ASV as Fondo Borghese IV, vols. 28, 108, 109, 123, 137, 205, and 206, respectively.

Several special envoys were sent to France during the revolutionary and Napoleonic eras, including a legate a latere who served from 1801 to 1810. The permanent n...
