Catholic Church. Apostolic Nunciature (Cologne, Germany)
During the reign of Gregory XIII (1572-1585) the duties of the nuncio to the Holy Roman Empire were expanded to include overseeing the implementation of the decrees of the Council of Trent in the empire. Several new nunciatures were established to assist in carrying out this task. The nunciature for Cologne was established in 1573, with responsibility for dioceses in the northwestern part of the empire, particularly in the Rhineland. The nunciature was vacant from 1578 to 1584. In 1584 its responsibility was expanded to include Flanders, Strassbourg, and Basel. Flanders was detached from its responsibility in 1595 and made a separate nunciature. From 1794, when the city was seized by the French, the nuncio did not reside in Cologne. For periods of time after 1794 the nuncio was also responsible for Bavaria. The nunciature was abolished in 1805.
