Manuscripts (1860-1913) encompass about 5,400 items including scrapboooks and portfolios of personal papers, notes, transcripts, and proofs of published works, and a diary in French (1860-1869). This group is individually catalogued. Correspondence (1865-1913) includes about 5,800 items chiefly to Ward concerning professional matters. Less than half of this group is catalogued individually; the remainder being accessible through a register. The two main series are the correspondence and the writings. The latter is subdivided into unpublished writings and manuscripts of published monographs. The microfilmed portions of the collection include the whole of Series I, Correspondence (Subseries A through E); of Series II, Writings, the filmed Subseries include A-1 (diary), A-2 (articles), A-3 (miscellaneous manuscripts), A-4 (autobiography), A-5 (bibliography), A-6 (Sociology lecture notes; in Subseries B (Published Writings), the manuscripts and typescripts have been filmed. The whole of Series III, Reviews/Press Notices, is filmed; of Series IV, Indexes, the Index Rerum portion has been filmed; in Series V, Lists, the Bibliography of Ward's Readings with Notes has been filmed.
