Troy Houston Middleton (b. Oct. 12, 1889, Hazelhurst, Mississippi-d. Oct. 9, 1976), Lieutenant General, U.S. Army, enlisted in the service following graduation from college and was commissioned in the infantry in 1912. He served in Mexico and with the 47th and 39th Infantry in the American Expeditionary Force. He was professor of military science and tactics (1930-1936) and retired the first time in 1937. Recalled to active duty in 1941, he was assigned to the Infantry Replacement Training Center, and later was commanding general of the 45th Infantry Division and of VIII Corps. This decorated officer retired in August 1945. He later served as president of Louisiana State University from 1951 to 1962.

This letter, dated December 11, 1944, was written days before the Battle of the Bulge, in which Middleton fought. He later served as president of Louisiana State University (1950-1962). Henry E. Attaya served in the LSU R.O.T.C. in 1935 while Middleton was commandant of cadets.
