Byars, Vance, 1923-2002,
Dr. Vance Byars (1923-2002) was born in Shreveport, La., and raised in several places in East Texas while following his father's oilfield work. He attended Louisiana State University in 1939 and enlisted in the National Guard at age 16. He served in the Army during World War II and remained in the Reserves until 1987.
