Dent, Frederick T. (Frederick Tracy), 1820-1892
Variant namesFrederick Tracy Dent (December 17, 1821 - December 24, 1892) was born in St. Louis County, Missouri. He was a graduate of the United States Military Academy where he was a classmate of Ulysses S. Grant, who married Dent's sister, Julia. Like Grant, Dent served in the Mexican War and the Civil War. When Grant was appointed Lt. General, he selected his brother-in-law as an aide-de-camp. After the war, Dent accompanied Grant to the White House as his military secretary, and it is in this capacity the bulk of the letters in this collection were received. After his resignation as secretary, Dent served in the army another ten years and died a decade later.
