He died July 24, 1991, in Surfside, FL. As an author he wrote fiction that chronicled the lives and legends of Eastern European Jews, and the adventures of new American immigrants in the twentieth century. Many of his stories evoke the culture of the Jewish ghettos of Eastern Europe. He was the son of a Jewish rabbi, and did most of his writing in Yiddish. In 1978 he won the Nobel Prize for literature.
