Scots-born author John Gibson Lockhart was possessed of a scathing wit, and his early criticism and satire earned him the nickname of The Scorpion. Gibson achieved success and respect as editor of the Quarterly Review; perhaps his most lasting contributions to literature are his biographies, including important early works on Robert Burns and Lockhart's father-in-law, Sir Walter Scott.
