Son of Adlai Stevenson II, Illinois Governor and Ambassador to the United Nation, and Ellen Borden, daughter of millionaire adventurer John Borden and Ellen Waller, who sat on the Board of Directors of the Bloomington Pantagraph, was a member of the Chicago Crime Commission and served on the Board of Trustees for Hull House prior to entering politics.

Left U.S. Senate of own accord and returned to Mayer, Brown and Platt, his old law firm, and planned his campaign for governor of Illinois. Ran unsuccessfully for governor in 1982 and 1986. Then formed his own international merchant banking company, which focused much of its business on Japan and China. He was president of the Japan America Society and in 1994 the government of Japan awarded him the Order of the Sacred Treasure Gold and Silver Stars.
