The Peabody Museum, founded in 1866 by George Peabody, has sent over 800 expeditions to all parts of the world. These expeditions, together with gifts and purchases, have resulted in the amassing of a comprehensive collection of ethnological, archaeological and somatological materials.

Built in 1876, the Peabody Museum is one of the oldest museums devoted entirely to the disciplines of archaeology and ethnology. The building, designed by R.H. Slack, is located at 11 Divinity Avenue. The Peabody Museum houses treasures of prehistoric and historic cultures from all over the world. Archaeological holdings comprise the bulk of the Museum's collections, and number in the millions, with its greatest strengths in the Americas and Eurasia.
