Manorial surveys were made to provide the lord of the manor with comprehensive details of the revenues that he could expect from his lands and other possessions. Survey records were not intended as records of payments, which appear in manorial accounts.

Robert Beale (1541-1601) served as ambassador to France starting in 1570, special envoy of queen Elizabeth to the German Lutheran princes 1576, Secretary of State 1578 and 1581-1583, and was in parliament from Dorchester in 1586 and 1588. In addition, he served under Leicester in 1588 in the Netherlands probably with the transport department. As a scholar he is known for two books which maintain the principle of toleration and for works glorifying marriage and women.

From the guide to the Robert Beale letters, 1569-1597, (L. Tom Perry Special Collections)

Manorial accounts were made on an annual basis, and could relate to one or more properties. A standard format was adopted very early in the thirteenth century, which remained largely unchanged throughout the period covered by the records in this series. A balance sheet for the property or estate as a whole was usually produced to record the financial obligations of the official to the lord.

From the description of Special Collections: Ministers' and Receivers' Accounts [microform]. [1216-1799] (Center for Research Libraries). WorldCat record id: 270991032

Sheila Lambert used this material to make a complete list of the 18th century parliamentary papers that had been printed. The results of this investigation led to the publishing by Scholarly Resources of the 145 volume set of HOUSE OF COMMONS SESSIONAL PAPERS OF THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY and a two-volume introduction and list of papers edited by Sheila Lambert.

From the description of Treasury warrant books (photocopies), 1780-1786. (Unknown). WorldCat record id: 754863332
